Adds Much to Effect.
Tha dres rehearsal of the opera
"Romeo and Juliet," with tha principals
and choru In complete costume, took
place yesterday afternoon at the Heilig
Theater In the presence of a company
of society women and representatives
of tha Baby Home, and wa a complete
success.
Madame Jomelll as Juliet waa the
principal attraction on, the stage, and
her brilliant singing and acting were
characterised by Xlrst-cJaes artistry.
Norman A. Hoose as Romeo was splen.
did. and tha principals were eminently
satisfying in their respective roles.
Th chorus sang with fine effect,
earning praise for Its mastery of shad
ing and expression. The orchestra of
li pieces wa under the direction of
Roberto Corruccini. and splendidly sup
ported the singers.
Everything is now In excellent con
dition for the public performances,
which will take place tonight, tomor
row night and Saturday afternoon.
An agreement Is In process of con

J. L. HART-MAW ROW MANAGER OF
CLISAJUSG-HOLSE ASSOCIATION.
Re-election af Official Ia far Bla
Tweaty-elghtb Saeeeaalva, Term
la Executive Office.
For the 28th consecutive year, J. I
Hartman waa elected manager of the
Portland Clearlng-House Association
at thu annual meeting of that body
yesterday. , . .
Mr. Hartman first was elected to
that position when the clearing-house
waa organized, in 1899. He ha
been re-elected every year ince then
without a single Interruption In his
service.
George W. Bates, president of the
Lumbermen's National Bank. waa
elected president of the association.
Other officers elected were: Vice
president, P. C. Mai pas. manager of
the Canadian Bank of Commerce: sec
retary. Lansing Stout, of the Hibernla
Savings Bank; executive committee,
Mr. Bates. Mr. Mai pas, K. Lea Barnes,
vice-president of the United States
National: E. A. Wyld. cashier of the
First National, and A. L. Mills, presi
dent of the First National.
A unanimoua vote of thanks was ex
tended to R. Lea Barnes, the retir
ing president. .
The proposal to reduce the rata or
interest on savinga account from 4
per cent to S per cent waa informally
considered and a committee appointed
to investigate and report at a future
meeting.
Some banks want to reduce the rate,
but others, it 1 understood, are op
posed to the proposed reduction. It
is obvious that it will be inadvisable
to force a reduction unless all the
banks become a party to the plan.

PENNY CHANGE
Nation-Wide Thrift Campaign
By the American Bankers' Association to mark savings-bank
centennial.
The first savings bank in the United States was
established in 1816. It came when the population
of the United States was only 9,500,000, and there
were but 246 banks in the country.
Today, with our National wealth approximating
$187,000,000,000 and almost one hundred millions of people in
the country, we have about $4,700,000,000 in the savings
banks, belonging to ten and a half million depositors.
The above is taken from the Journal of the American In
stitute of Banking.
