On an aver age 300 slogans are being received each day at headquarters, 33a Northwestern Bank building. The number of slogans received from various cities and towns of Oregon and Washington is increasing. The last day for submitting sloe ana is Saturday, January 15. Slogans postmarked Janu ary la will be admitted. The contest this year, according; to festival directors, has proved beyond question the widespread interest in the festival throughout the Northwest. Already more than 200 cities and towns in Oregon and Washington are repre sented in the slogans received. The publicity committee. S. C. (Special.) At a recent meeting of the School Board, J. W. Berrian was selected to take the place of B. F. Mulkey who re cently moved to Portland. Owing to the crowded condition of the high school it was decided to use certain rooms in the grade schools Tor the overflow. It is probable that a Junior high school will be formed. Mat hew V. Plnkerton Dead. CHICAGO. Jan. 6. Mathew W. Pink- erton. head of the Plnkerton United States Detective Agency, is dead at his home here after an illness of two months. Mathew W. Pinkerton was not related to the late Allan Plnker ton and was not connected with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Coos Engages Portland Engineer. MARSHFIELD. Or, Jan. 6. (Special.) The Coos County Court has con tracted with Robert Bruce Murdock, a Portland engineer, for his services dur ing 1916 as supervising roadmaster of the county at a salary of 3200 a month.
