That the Franklin Hlfrh School will
be the lamest in Portland when all
the units of the new building; are com
pleted and occupied was the state
ment made at the celebration of the
aeeond annlvernary of the entahllnh-
nient of the Franklin High School
Tuesday night In the Cresto- :hool
under the auspices of the Franklin
Parent - Teacher Association. Mrs. J.
F. Chapman, president of the associa
tion, presided.
City Superintendent Alderman spoke
on the subject. "What May Be Done
by a High School Parent - Teacher
Association."
U. H. Thomas, clerk of the Board of
Education, reviewed the growth of the
Portland high schools since the first
was built.
Principal Ball said that when Frank
lins; High School was established two
years ago the enrollment was 76 stu
dents, and that the present enroll
ment is S16. In February, he said, the
enrollment will be 670, and next Sep
tember It will be 00. At the resent
rate of increase he said that there
will be 1500 students in the Franklin
High School when the first class is
ready to graduate.
A short musical programme was
rendered by students of the school.
Olymaia Debt Is $1,194,181.
OLYMPIA. Wash.. Jan. 5. (Spe
cial.) According to a statement issued
by the State Treasurer, the Washing
ton Capitol building fund is in debt
$1,194,181. of which .495.06S is charged
on warrants and guaranteed interest.
The Capitol Building Commission will
open bids January 18 for a bond issue
of. 11.500,000. out of which it is pro
posed to complete the Temple of Jus
tice at a cost approximating .400,000,
and to apply the balance upon the
standing indebtedness.
