HILLS SEE BIG YEAR Coos Preparing to Handte 25 Per Cent Over Record. LUMBER SHIPS GATH-ERED Plants Arrange to Operate Soon nt Full Time and Increased Ca pacity to Meet Gocatcr De mand Is Being; Miulc. MARSHFIELD, Or.. Jan. 5. (So cial.) Nineteen sixteen promises to be the greatest lumbering year Coos Bay haa known, and the cut from the mills on this port is expected to be at least 25 per cent more than in any previous season. The estimate is based oa re cent orders, accepted, and others now under consideration. The large C. A. Smith mills, capable of 700.000 cut In 10 hours, will be operating full time by the latter part of January, and this will occupy three vessels in transporting- the lumber. The Adeline Smith, with a capacity; of 2.000,000 feet, has been the only regular vessel the mills have kept iii commission for the past six months, with the exception of an occasionally chartered boat utilized to carry away surplus accumulations. The Nann Smith, which has been transporting material for the allies between a Chilean port and Vancouver, will return to Coos Bay and the Smith traffic by the middle of January. Her capacity of 1,750.000 feet. To this pair of large vessels another one will be added to handle the entire output. The Porter mill, at Nortfl Bend, has been keeping two vessels busy for the past four months the A. M. Simpson" and. Hardy. These vessels can handle the output of the mill, which is about 100.000 feet daijy. The North Bend Mill & Lumber Com pany plant i being enlarged to a 130.000-foot capacity and will require two .vessels regularly to transport the large orders it has on hand. The steam schooners Yellowstone and Westerner have been carrying the mill's lumber, but another ship may be chartered during the early months of the year. Tie manufacturing and shipping will be largely increased by several new- camps on the Coos Bay and Coquille sides of the county. rne steamer Sneedwell has handled a large portion it the ties cut in the county durinc . . j.ii : ' . . n D..n tne past year, uciivciiua, . - and San Diego. Another vessel will be required to keep the docks elearea of ties. One shinffle mill, that at .ortn Bend, haa a read v doubled its crew and works a night shift, and the C. A. Smith shingle mill will add a night crew when the Nann Smith returns to port. Indications point to a double shift at the Smith mill within the next two months, as demand for lumber is in creasing with the rise in prices. Hermiston Club Elects. 1 1 1-Ii.I IL'THV nr.
