She tells, with enjoyment, of the fears of some of ber friends who, when the new sys tern was Inaugurated, were -"hast at tha thought of ber being; left alone "with desperate convicts" when the Governor was out of town. Another source of concern to some traa the peculiar close friendship which sprang; up between Master John Lister, the Governor's 13-year-old son. and one "Louis." formerly a cook. Th honor camp system on highway work, started several months before the help problem at the mansion be came acute, gave the Governor the Idea of employing convicts for domestic help. Tha lonely situation of the mansion, partly surrounded by a grove of trees and with the old capitol foun dations to be passed by domestics who desired to visit a picture show at night, made It next to Impossible, dur ing both the Hay and Lister adminis trations, to keep help. "The real benefit from the honor camp system comes to the men rather than to the state." TWO DIE ON CHRISTMAS Lane County Loses Old-Time Man and Woman Settlers. EUGENE, Or., Dec. 26. (Special.) According to word received here today, Mrs. Mary A. Holland, who came to Oregon in 1S52. died last night at her home In Crow, Lane County, at the age of 76. She was the mother of the Hol land brothers, who are well known in this part of the state. Funeral serv ices will be held at Crow at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. John Fletcher Walker, another pio neer of the Willamette Valley, died at Walker, Lane County. Christmas day, at the age of 88 years. He came to Oregon in 1862 from California by boat, after having crossed the plains with a mule team in 1860. He settled on aj donation claim near Cottage Grove inl I Street 5 1863, and had since resided in Lane County. He was a descendant of Cap tain John Smith, whoso life was saved by. Pocahontas.
