IS2.O00 Seattle Chamber of Commerce is pre pared to fight vigorously the request made by Portland that In case terminal rates are granted to Astoria by the Spokane. Portland & Seattle Railway, corresponinfrly lower rates be triven Portland. This, according to W. A. Hears, of the chamber's transportation bureau, would result in cheaper rates being; given Portland for transconti nental shipments than are granted Seattle. The case of terminal rates to Astoria is now before the Interstate Commerce Commission. L. C. Oilman, president of the Spo kane, Portland & Seattle, in a state ment regarding- the request says: "The request for lower rates to Portland Involves carriers other than my rail road, and rates other than Portland rates. I have, therefore, before answer ing, taken occasion to advise with the representatives of other railway com panies Interested. In the Judgement of representatives of this company and representatives of other companies the request of the Portland Chamber of Commerce involves action that would result in a general rate reduction." Mr. Gilman says the railroads are not in a particularly good financial condition and that many communities are consenting to rate increases to aid them. and of moderate to fresh gale fores near the coast.
