Henry B..Brophy. well-known hopman. and warden of the Oregon penitentiary from IS9S to 1899. was shot and in stantly killed early today at his farm In Polk County, when tho trigger of a shotgun he carried caught on an Iron gate and was discharged. Inquiry by Coroner Clough, of Marlon County, showed that death was accidental. Brophy was taking a cow to the pas. ture. He carried his shotgun with the Intention of hunting ducks. He opened the gate to the pasture to let the cow in. and aa he closed it. the trigger of the gun caught on it- Mr. Brophy was 63 years old and a native of California. A widow and one son. John uropnr. survive nun. me latter Is engaged in the hop business in Polk County, Just across the river from Salem. From 18S7 to 1S93, when George Mc- Brlde was Secretary of State. Mr. Bro phy was superintendent of the State Capitol Building and grounds. In 1895 ho waa appointed warden of the Peni tentiary, when Governor Lord named A. N.
