The firm of Porter Bros., Mccreary &. Wlllard. which has the contract to assemble the steel, has started to move out tbe fourth and completed span to the end of the assembling- ways and at once will begin the assembling of four more spans. When these are completed hlch will be some time In February. five spans will be floated out, similar In manner to those already in place. Five Is the greatest number of spans that can be built and kept on the assembling ways at one time. When five more have been built and floated into place there will be nine spans in position and there will be but 13 all told in the whole main portion of tbe bridge. So it would seem, the con tractors say. that the maua bridge serosa the Columbia River win be com pleted Ions before contract time, but it will probably not bo used, as the contractors building the tills will not desire to pave them until the last min ute. Owing- to the great probability of settling, bridge men say, the first pave ment on the fills should be heavy plank, and hard-surface should not be laid before two years have elapsed, to give the fill ample time in which to settle. It is held that if the hard- surface pavement is laid before then that concrete fills would settle and crack seriously, and this could not be easily repaired. a be discontinued."
