Teal, representing the Portland Chamber of Commerce, will appear be fore the Interstate Commerce Commis sion at Washing-ton. D. C. this week to present the Portland viewpoint against the proposed discontinuation of the Associated Oil steamer service be tween Portland and San Francisco. The Associated Oil Company Is con trolledthrough ownership of 51 per cent of its capital stock by the South ern Pacific Company. A few months ago the Southern Fa ciflo Company asked the Interstate Commerce Commission whether the operation of the tank steamers by the Associated Oil Company between Port land and San Francisco was in viola tion of the Interstate commerce code, inasmuch as this service parallels the Southern Pacific's rail line. The Com mission replied that this was a viola tion of the code and ordered the oil company to dispose of its steamers. The Southern Pacific Company then axked for a'reopenlnjr of the ca?e. At the first investigation it did not offer any evidence. The various cities and commercial organizations affected by the service also Intervened in the case and a rehearing Is scheduled to tcke place in Washington this week. It is pointed out tnat maintenance of the present setvice is beneficial to the public interests. Inasmuch as the tank linra can transport the oil from Caitfornia to Oregon much cheaper than can the Southern Pacific rail line. The Southern Pacific also contends that because the tankers perform the service so much cheaper they are not In actual competition with the rail line.
