Condition of Financial Insti
tutions Declared Excellent
Lack of adequate transportation fa
clinics has prevented th Pacific Coast
states from sharing In tb present
stimulus to trad occasioned by the
heavy demand of the foreign markets
upon American manufacturers, says the
report of the tan Francisco bank of
the Federal reserve system In the De
cember Issue of tbe Federal Reserve
bulletin.
The report. In reviewing the general
situation on the Coast, pays particular
attention to the lumber Industry or
tbe Northwest, which it declares to be
lDlir0iii.
Distance and difficulties In trans
portation have prevented the present
abnormal foreign Oemands from giving
Important stimulus to the trade and
territory of this district." saya the
review.
It seems Justifiable, therefore, that
small readjustments will be required
west of tbe Rocky Mountains when
these demands shrink at the close of
tbe war. A concurrent increase In the
demand for lumber Is not unlikely fully
to offset the decrease in demand then
(or other products. So this district
may Justly hope for reasonable sta
blllty in lis commerce.

"This constitutes a favorable out
look, for. on the whole, present condl

There is perceptible betterment in lum

been Important inquiries and consider

strengthened the demoralized prices.
Petroleum Is benefiting by expanding
consumption, which, during October,
reduced the amount in storage by
1.000.000 barrels. Both crude and re
nned nroducta have advanced in price.
"Tha unsatisfactory condition oi
