on May 1. 1908, at midday, a gasplpe
being used. Robbery was the motive.
E. H. Martin was arrested at his East
Side home when suspicion was centered
upon him by tho finding of a blood
stained shirt near the Washington
rooming-house. He gave the name of
E. H. Barrett when taken Into custody
by Detectives Hellyer and Goltx.
Though an attempt waa made to
fasten the murder of Wolff on Jack La
Rose, a young marine fireman who was
charged with the murder of Herman
Nauman, another pawnshop keeper, this
railed and Martin was convicted on
circumstantial evidence. Taking Into
consideration tho fact that ho was ad
dieted to the use of morphine, the Jury
round mm cuuty or manslaughter and
he was sentenced to 15 years' imprison
ment and a fine of $1000. At tbe same
time La Rose waa sentenced to life
Imprisonment for the Nauman murder.
