AMENDMENT IS REQUESTED Poet ported Action on Proposed Act Itequlrlnc Automatic Gas Shut Off AIo Anked, Tending I'urtlier Inreallsatlon. Th Portland Chamber of Commerce yeeterday went on record a opposed to tho paaaag by th City Council of th proposed ordinance requiring the In stallation within three years of base ment automatic sprinkler system in all non-fireproof, buildings two or more stories In height within the Inner fir limits. Also tha Chamber asked tb Council to postpone action on tho ordlnanc requiring automatic gas shuiorf in ail building until an In reetlgatlon can be made. Th two re quests were embodied In resolution adopted by th Chamber yesterday, copies of which hare been sent to the Couo-!1. Itoth measure will b before th Council this morning. Th sprinkler system opposition ha been stirred up by ren.on of tha ex penditure necessary In old bulldintr to comply with tbo provlnlon of the measure. It Is said the cost of th sprinklers would be disproportionate to tb preaent ralu of such struc tures. Ilequest Is made In tho resolu tions that th meaaur be changed so aa to require tb sprinkler In build ing erected hereafter, or remodeled hereafter, to th extent of SO per cent of their ralue. but exempting building now standing and not to b remodeled. raderwrttera Appro Meaaarea. With the gas shut-off measure, re quest I mad merely for time In which to Inrentlgate. Both measure orig inated in the office of Klre Marshal ftteeena and bar tha approval of the I'ubllo Safety Commission and the fir underwriter. With tb recommenda tion of the) bodies, the measures were sent to Commissioner Dleck. He in turn referred them to th building code rerlslon committee, which considered the propositions and prepared th ordlnancea which they sent to Commissioner Dleck with rec ommendation that they bo passed by tha Council for tb general safety of the city. It is possible that a dtvwlll be set for a public hearing before th meas ure ar passed. froteetlaa of Flresaea -aghf- Th purpose of tha gaa shut off or dinance la to require the Installation of a system whlcb will shut off the en tire gaa supply In a building by the pushing of a button on the outside of the building. Tbl I said by Fir Marshal Steven to be for the protec tion both of property and the lire of firemen. J. A. Foullhoux. a member of the building code revision committee, said last night that th sprinkler measur baa tha approval of th American In stitute of Architects, th Fir Marshal and th tnsuranc people. He said be considers It a move for the general safety of the buslnesa part of th city. Mr. Foullhoux say tb committee fig ured that tb cost of Installing such a system In a basement 10 by 100 feet In sis would b about izoo. lie say he considers, that th hardship of the plan Is removed by reason of three rear time being glrea In which to In stall tb ystem.
