O'Rourke Tells of Offer of
$150 to Throw Game
to Oregon.
TACKLE KEPT OUT OF PLAY
J. C. McElroy Tells of Remark
Bawed on Belief That Stars Would
Not riay and Says This Was
Taken for Bribe Offer.
Tetty bickering between member of
the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club
football team caused a near-scandal
yesterday when rumors flew about
town that someone had "faked" and
played "possum" In the game against
the University or Oregon on Thanks
giving day. Oregon won 15-2.
After a quiet Investigation by offi
cial of the Multnomah Club those on
the Inside were certain that there had
been no bribery and that the game
was played squarely. But. the breach
between Patsy O'Rourke. star tarfcle.
formerly of Minnesota and Georgetown,
and "Red" Rupert, captain, remained
wider than ever.
O'Rourke t-aid that someone offered
him $150 to "lay down" to Oregon. He
approached George Phllbrook. the
former Notre Dame star, and asked him
if he was In on the deal. Phllbrook
said he was not. but waa willing. Im
mediately Philbrook reported the mat
ter to Manager Pratt and ' to Dow
Walker, superintendent of the club, and
they told him to go ahead and try to
find out more about the plot.
Although he talked with O'Rourke
about it the day before the game, no
body ever came through with the
money and O'Rourke showed up for the
game expecting to play as usual. In
stead he was told to sit on the bench.
Incensed at thia action, O'Rourke
turned In his suit after the game, and
Is said to have told friends that Ru
pert must have been one of those
"bought" because of his failure to play
a pas or buck at one time on Oregon's
eight yard line wttti two yards to go
for first down. '
It was this statement of O' Rourke's
that resulted in publicity and the In
vestigation. Pkuldnddery Nat Kalerfalnrd.
' Those who know O'Rourke intimate
Ir and also the club officials.- Rupert,
Martin Pratt and Dow Walker, do not
for a moment entertain any notions
that ther was ekulduddcry in Thurs
day' game.
O'Rourke refuses to say who made
him the offer, but rumors linked him
with J. C. McElroy, former "sheep kin"
of the Willamette Valley and a son of
ex-State Superintendent of Public In
struction McElroy.
Mr. McElroy follows sports closely
and occasionally plunges on a "hunch."
"Mr. O'Rourke has been doing some
law work for me." said Mr. McElroy
last night. "I raised Grover Francis
from a boy and. Grover is in O'Rourke's
office. That's how I came to be hooked
up with him In business. Well. Grover
got a telegram Tuesday night telling
him to go to Spokane and referee the
Washington State-Gonzaga game, and
as O'Rourke said then that he didn't
think he was going to play for Mult
nomah, I had a hunch immedlaately
that Oregon would beat Multnomah.
No Attempt Made at Bribery.
"So I passed a remark to O'Rourke
that I had about $150 to bet on Oregon
If he didn't olay. I have always been
a square bettor, and wouldn't think of
trying to buy a man of O'Rourke's cali
ber. And my boy Grover wouldn't
throw a game for a barrel of thousana
dollar bill.
"That night I called up Julian Mc
Fadden, of Corvallis. and told him t
wa a cinch for Oregon to win and to
come down and bet some money. The
next day O'Rourke told me he would be
in the came. I left that same after
noon for Salem to attend the Cherrian
ball, and when I got to thinking about
it I decided to bet on Multnomah wlin
O'Rourke in the game. So I did place a
125 bet on Multnomah, which 1 lost. 1
don't believe anybody else ever said a
word to O'Rourke about money, and I
think he was feeling around looking
for Information when he approached
Phllbrook. Nor do I think for a mo
ment that Red Rupert would ever throw
a rame.
"O'Rourke and Rupert are a bit sore
at each other, and out of this the whole
trouble grew."

At the Multnomah Athletic Club yes
terday Dow Walker was busy all day
trying to run do..-n rumors. Toward
evening President Ralph Wilbur held
a conference with Superintendent
Walker, Manager Martin Pratt, of the
football team, apd Captain Rupert.
"The matter Is a big surprise to roe."
said President Wilbur. "The affair will
be taken up by the board and will be
sifted to the bottom. If any of the
rharirea are Droved true, the club will
hew to the line without regard to
anyone.
Manager Tratt and Captain Rupert
both substantiated Philbrook's state
ment that-he had reported the matter
to them early Wednesday morning
after his talk with O'Rourke the night
before.
