The fish raueht on Salmon River are shipped to Mc.Mlnnvllle, and from there reach the Portland market- There has been no cannery In operation on Ya uulna Bay for several seasons owlna: to the scsrclty of the fish therein, and the fish causht there ara also shipped to outside dealer. On Sllet Bay a cannery I operated by the Klmore Company, and they re port only a moderate pack. At Wald port there are two cannerie operated respectively by the Klmora Company and tha K. K. Harncs Company, of Port land. The packs at both these plant are much under those of last season. (Special.) An attempt to swindle P. J. Fran sloll & Co., grain brokers of Tacoma and Seattle, of $7000 was frustrated yesterday afternoon by detectives ana Northern Pacific special agents. A, C Smith. 44, said to be one of a gang, waa arrested in Uealtle. He is said to have confessed. 11 gave his home as Davenport, Wash. Smith will ba prosecuted," said P. J. Fransloli today. Frsnsloli. manager of the Se attle branch, received a letter from Smith last Saturday, in which it was staled Smith was shipping six cars of wheat for sala. Bills of lading were Inclosed, signed by P. Joy. Northern Pacific agent at Kooskia, Idaho, from where the wheat was shipped. Monday morning Smith appeared and after in troducing himself, presented a bill of lading for a seventh car. Only two cars had arrived. It was arranged set tlement be made Tuesday. When Smith came to the office Tues day detectives arrested him. In his confession the police say Smith ad mitted substituting forged bills of lad ing and way bills In a shanty near Lewlston, Idaho, for real ones left in the shanty a short time by freight con ductors. Then he changed the tags on the cars and gave them a new destina tion. YOUXG Man I Wanted In Portland for Various Grain Swindles. i It Is thought in Portland that "A. C. Smith" is the man who, under the name J C Young left Portland th Middle of last January, after he had swindled the Columbia Milling Company out of $8340 by cashing forged bills of lading for grain that was supposed to come from a brother living near Twin Falls. Idaho Cpon coming to Portland Young first advertised for a young man who was familiar with the grain business and who knew market conditions. A re sponse came from George W. Ford, or Sheridan. Through Ford he negotiated the rtrst deal, selling a consignment of oats for $30. that first deal being bona fide and the shipment being made. He opened offices in the Chamber of Commerce, said he waa going in the mS0'n business and Ford to sell all the consignments. Young said thst he wanted to -sell while the market waa high.
