FRUIT FORCES DIFFER
APPLE GROWERS AXD MARKET
MEN AT VARIANCE ON PL. AN.
Final Deelaloa aa to Kalnlng 7."i,0O0
by Levy for Publicity Campaign
. In Northwest Is Pending.
HOOD RIVER. Or.. Nov. 22. (Spe
cial.) While a marked opposition was
apparent among the applegrowers and
market men of the Spokane fruit dis
trict, opinion as expressed by fruit
growers from all parts of the North
west presages an adoption next Jan
uary of the proposed plans of the
Growers' Council as recently outlined,
according to E. H. Shepard. of this
city, who returned Saturday from con
ferences of apple men at the Spokane
National Apple Show last week.
It is proposed to levy an assessment
of one cent a box on all fruit to raise
a fund to be used in opening up new
apple markets, widening distribution
and increasing consumption. It is es
timated that such a ley will collect
a fund of more than $75,000 with
which to wage an apple publicity cam
paign. No one district will be fea
tured, but all Northwestern box apples
will be given the benefit of the fund
impartially.
'"The Spokane rruitmen." says Mr.
Shepard, "are :.i:parently opposed to
the proposition, since they think it
will be better for all districts to con
duct their forward campaigns individ
ually." No definite action was taken at the
Spokane conference, which was in a
measure informal. Tentative plans
were discussed and It was left with the
exponents of the movement to work out
more complete details, to be submitted
at the second annual meeting of the
council in January.
The codling moth caused damage
ranging from 10 to 00 per cent, and
even higher in cases, in Northwestern
orchards. Dr. Melander declared that
weather conditions were more favor
able this year than ever on any for
mer year for the breeding of moths.
and that more than ever before the
Insects had survived the Winter of last
year.
