Pr. Kenneth D. Tanton, formerly of
Portland and a nephew of Dr. J. J
Panton. of this city, who left with the
first Canadian contingent last year for
the French front, has recently been
promoted to the rank of Lieutenant
Colunel In charge of an ambulance sec
tion. Ills sister. Miss Kathleen Panton, also
well known in Portland, is serving as
a nurse attached to tha British army.
Dr. Panton. started from Vancouver,
B. C. with the rank of Captain. He
was In charge of an ambulance. After
a sojourn at the mobilization camp of
Salisbury Plain he went with his con
tingent to the flghtin? front, whave he
saw very strenuous service, his dress
Ins station sending to the rear 5200
wounded during six days at the battle
of Ypres. the staff working almost
continuously night and day throughout
that time.
Hospital Work Done.
Since shortly after this battle he had
been attached to a stationary hospital
at Ua Toivrjtiet. France, until the pres
ent monlli. when he wa. placed in
charge of the British Columbian, unit
In the hospital at Shoriicliffe. Kngland.
with the rank of Uieutenant-Colonel.
This hospital Is interestinR- in the
fart that the physicians, surgeons
nurses and patients are all Canadians,
Sir William Osier being at the heaa
of the medical department and Lr.
Donald Armour being chief surgeon.
Dr. Panton graduated at Toronto,
and after serving as interne in a hos
pital there, came west to Portland, at
one time ti Ulnar a position on the house
stnff at Good Samaritan Hospital.

to her:
"Dr. Donald Armour, chief surgeon
of one of the principal hospitals in
Kngland. writing to a friend In lo-
routo, pays a high compliment to nurses
trained at tho Hospital for McK Chil
dren. Toronto. He writes:

Including the doctor and Miss Kath
leen, there are six Pantons with the
British .army, the Irish cousins being
oflicers In the engineers, and the sister
of one of them being a nurse in an
army hospital. There Is also a cousin.

to continued rough weather. The bar hart
smoothed down some towards night and It

The wreck of the steamship Santa Clara
lias broken in two and the stern hold and
superstructure came ashore. Beach comb
ers have removed much from that section
of the boat since it came ashore, but a
great deal of lighter stuff went to sea.
