The voters of PiMnevillo Sat urday at a special electiop refused to adopt an amendment to tlie city char ter raising the maximum levy of taxes for municipal purposes from 10 to 15 mills. On account of the prohibition law five saloons in Brine vi lie will go out of business on December 31. Be cause of tho prospective loss in reve nues from saloon licenses the present cilv administration proposed an amend ment to the city charter permiUikig a tax levy of 15 mills. In order to raise the amount called for by this year's budget, it was deemed necessary either to levy a tax of 15 mills or provide for an occupa tion tax. Tvo weeks ago a mass meet ing of the business men of the city considered the matter and approved the action of the City Council in sub mitting the amendment. Little interest was shown thereafter. and at yesterday's election the amend ment lost by five votes. An amendment making the office of City Marshal ap pointive instead of elective was car ried bv one vote.
