12 SCHOOLTAD UPHELD Critics of Vocational Training Taken to Task. MR. ALDERMAN REPLIES City 'Superintendent Declares Child Without Modern Training Com parable to Farmer "Who Con tinues to Plow With Oxen. If manual training, domestic sci ence, commercial form and the other vocational training in the public schools today are "fads," then the steam plow, modern reapers and har vesters and threshing machines are "fads of the farm." The modern child -whose intellectual provender is merely the "three r's" "readin", rltin' and 'rithmetic is, in terms of proportion, to success and progress today, just what the farmer is who tills his field with oxen and threshes his grain with a flail. Such, in brief, is the reply of L, R. Alderman, Superintendent of Public Schools, to the questions put to him as a result of the hearings on the school budget for next year. It is his rejoin der to taxpayers who have suggested the elimination of vocational training: his reply to the question: "Is the pub lic school system faddish or does the general pub'ic need and demand the courses that are added to the curric ulum from time to time?" "I am glad you have asked about 'fads' in our school system." said Mr. .Alderman yesterday, "because in these days of budget making the Superin tendent's office is under a constant fire of quescions as to why this or that subject needs to be introduced or re tained in the curriculum at so much ex pense to the taxpayers, when we used to get .ilong vory well without all of these things. "Times have changed. Conditions have changed. Our whole economic and Indust.-ial life is utterly different from what it was 30 years ago. The boy no longer follows the . occupation of his father and the girl of her mother. From the comparatively simple life of an earlier civilization we have come suddenly, it would seem, upon the highly complex problems of today. "And yet there are people living in this age of rapid transit, of high mo tive power and of minutely special ized industries, who would graduate our boys and girls from the public schools, about as well equipped to face the bread and butter problem as the farmer with the ox team. "In the old days the grade schools prepared for high school and the high schools prepared for college. N'bw, as a matter of fact, the greater number of l.oys and girls do not and never did go to college, and less than half finish high school. "The 'fads in the Portland schools are: Manual training, music, drawing, cooking, sewins and physical educa tion. None of these has been added recently and no city in the country has fewer of these so-called fads. The survey of the Portland schools made three years ago criticised us for not having more. "It is not the province of the educa tor to decide for the individual child what his vocation is to be. But it is the province it is the supreme duty of those who plan the whole course of study, io see that each student when he leaves school provided he makes the best of all the system had to offer him shall be so prepared as to be able to make an intelligent choice of a vo cation." CENSORSHIP IS UPHELD MRS. COLOWELL EXPLAINS WORK OF PORTLAND BOARD. Westminster Presbyterians Indorse Ef forts to Prevent Exhibition of Improper Films. "There is an attachment for the automobile called the shock-absorber. which does away with the sharp bumps. In the same way the moving picture censor board is the shock-absorber be tween the people and the film pro ducers that does away with the bumps, but carries with it severe criticisms," said Airs. K. B. Coldwell, secretary of the Portland Moving Picture Board of Censors, in her address yesterday be fore the men's current events class of Westminster Presbyterian Church. "Inside Facts About the Moving Pic ture Censorship" was the subject of her talk, and fehe outlined the method of Judging the merits of films produced. Mrs. Coldwell contended that the National board is not enough to pro tect the people of Portland against immoral pictures. She also pointed out that an effort Is being made to do away with all legalized censorship of films. "I believe that Portland is a better Judge of the character of the pictures that should be shown here," declared Mrs. Coldwell, "than a lot of people back in Xew York. Some would let the films be shown and the public Judge for itself, but then the harm has been done beyond recall. Boys and girls who view the pictures are deeply in fluenced and impressed by the pictures which cannot be recalled." Mrs. Coldwell explained the work of the Portland board. "We of the current events class, Mrs. Coldwell.' said O. E. Henry, who pre sided, "believe the Portland Board of Motion Picture Censors is doing a good work, and has our support and sym pathy for the self-sacrificing work of the members of the board."
