higher at 17Vs20 cents a basket. Other
grape prices were unchanged.
There was a fair demand for apples with
Jonathans most In favor. Tbe majority of
sales were of $1 to l.SO-frulU
Local cauliflower was in larger supply and
most of it of good quality. Tomato receipts
are declining and the market holds steady
at 4 cents for tbe best.
Eastern Markets Are Depressed by
Action of I'rencu Government in
Imposing High Tariff on
Imported Wheat.
The wheat market, which has been strong
ef late, took a turn the other way yester
day. Bids were reduced all along the line
and buyers were Indifferent about taking- on
fresh supplies and at the same time looked
tor more sailing pressure from growers.
The Eastern cash markets declined 1 to
2 cents and options at Chicago went off
about aa much. The action of the Frenca
government In putting an Import duty on
wheat was a deprerslng factor everywhere.
There was one sale at the Merchants' Ex
change. 500 bushels of November blnestem
at 91 cents, a drop of X cent from Tuesday's
price. Forty-fold bids were lowered 1 to
1 Vs cents and club offers were half a cent
lower than th. day before.
The coarse grains were quiet, but generally
steady.
The patent flour market Is irregular. Sev
eral of the mills have raised their list price
-0 cents to $5, but others are holding at the
eld quotation of $4. SO.
Canadian visible grain statistics follow:
Wheat. 15,200.000 bushels; year ago, 24,
E8?,000 bushels: oats, 14,364.000 bushels:
year ago. 4.285.000 bushels; barley, 032,000
bushels; year a?o, 708,000 bushels.
A Chicago grain man. In a statement
just issued, givei the following reasons why
he believes May wheat will sell as high, or
higher, than last year, when the top was
11. 60.
First From our own statistical Informa
tion believe milling crop of wheat not over
7S0.000.000 bushels, probably less.
Second Export surplus of 123,000.000
bushels will be used up by January 1.
Third Winter wheat acreage according to
eur figures, will be 20 per cent less thaa
last year.
Fourth Visible supply 18.000,000 bushels
versus average of 40,000,000 bushels.
Fifth Small milling stocks.
Sixth Flour stock half usual amount.
Seventh European crop turning out
poorly.
Eighth Supplies of all countries will be
needed next Spring to take care of Europe,
Ninth According to our estimates .there
was not over S6.000.000 acres planted to
wha; In tho past year, though Government
save 40,000.000. On basis of SO-ycar aver
age Increase wa havu not averaged over
2.O0O.000 increase In all, counting the aver
age for all grain and at the rate tna
department of Agriculture makes Increase
In the last six years, they will show an
average annual increase of 6.000.000 acres,
which is beyond the ability of this country
to cultivate.

vicesBond Market Is Firm
With Broad Trading.
NEW YORK, Oct. 20. Aside from it
more orderly aavance in specialties today's
market presented no pronounced features of
new Interest. war shares dominated tbe
session, with some latent strength in a few
of the representative- rails.
Bethlehem bteel made the new high
record of 529, wn advance of 29 over lis
previous maximum. Other stocks that re it
lstened new high quotations included Stude-
ouKer, up ?, to 176, and American
Woolen, 2 to 57. There were gains of 1
to 3 points in such specialties as American
Locomotive, Baldwin Locomotive, American
Car & Foundry. Lackawanna Steel, United
States Industrial Alcohol, Distillers Se
curities and the fertilizers.
Metal shares, especially Inspiration Cop
per, were In demand with a revival of
rumors of consolidation of Inspiration with
Anaconda. Foreign refined copper also
proved a factor in that quarter of the list.
Among the backward specialties were
Westing house. General Electric Air Brake
and a few others which recently claimed a
large measure of speculative attention, con
solidated Gas made a further decline with
the approach of tbe time for action on the
dividend.
United States Steel was again the most
active of th former favorites, in fact of the
entire list, attaining its best price in the
early afternoon, when liberal buying m
large individual lots was resumed. Its rise
coincided with trade advices which
ported additional price advances for finished
materials and an increased inquiry for pig
iron and raw products. Steel fell back in the
final trading, however, the balance of the
list, especially railways, denoting moderate
pressure. The closing was irregular and dun.
Total salea amounted to 920.000 snares.
Estimates of November interest and div
idend disbursements show an Increase of
over S13.OuO.000 compared with the eorre
spondlng period of last year, and account
in large measure lor the prevailing mone
tary ease.
New foreign credits. Including one for
Russia, were under discussion la banking
circles.
Bonds were firm on diversified dealings.
Total sales, par value, aggregated $4,410,000.
Government bonde were unchanged on call.
