The young men's Bible class of the First 1'resbvterian Church will give a ban- nuet at 6:30 o'clock on Monday in the banquet hall of the church house. 454 Alder street, to all young men gi the class and their friends. This is one oft. the opening- features of the church year. President Andrew Chrystall and the teacher, H. C. Ewing, will outline a programme of athletic, social and religious plans which are expected to outstrip anything this class has ever attempted. Men only are invited. War Veterans to Have Picnic. Scout Young Camp, United Spanish War Veterans, will hold their annual picnic at Crystal Lake Park Sunday. Athletic sports and games, together with dancing afternoon and evening, will be the form of entertainment. The committee in charge of the arrange ments consists of J. I Ford, Robert A. Sawyer, E. K. Lyon, James McCarren and Dan Leatherman, assisted by the members of the women's auxiliary. The proceeds go to the relief fund to assist in caring for sick and needy comrades. Street Names Mat Bb Changed. The name of Yamhill street will be changed to Market street and Market street to Auditorium avenue, if a plan which has been suggested to members of the Council meets with official ap proval. The Commissioners have been asked to change the Yamhill street name on account of the public market and Market street on account of the auditorium which will be built on that street. Spokane Delegate in Doubt. The City Council will decide today whether el local representative will be sent to Spokane September 28 to attend the three days' session of the League of Taciflc Northwest Municipalities. A request has been made by officers of the league that a local official attend for the purpose of getting and giving ideas on municipal affairs which will be discussed by representatives from various cities. Citt Job Has Only Two Appucants. Only two persons so far have filed applications to take the municipal civil service examination to be held next Tuesday to get eligibles for posi tions as asphalt plant inspectors. The time for filing applications expires to morrow. There is a vacancy In the service and civil service officials can not understand why more persons have not filed to take the test. Masamas Lay Out Sondat Hike. For their Sunday outing the Mazamas will start from the main entrance to Council Crest at 9 A. M. The party will follow a trail through the woods along the ridge to Carson Heights, thence along Taylor's Ferry road to Garden Home. The return to town will be made along the Scholls Ferry and other roads to Mount Zion. Commissioner Baker to Talk. George L. Baker, City Commissioner, will talk on "Selling a City," and F. N. Clark, of the F. N. Clark Co., will talk on "Present Opportunities in Port land" at the meeting of the Portland Salesmen's Club tonight in the Eliza bethan room. Imperial Hotel. Im portant business is to be brought to the attention of every member. Baseball Teams' Members Sbb Film. As guests of Manager Bart Bertelson and James Clemmer, co-lessee, the mem bers of the San Francisco and Port land baseball teams attended the Heilig Theater Wednesday night to witness "The Birth of a Nation." The teams occupied blocks of seats and the boxes nnd were accorded fitting recognition by many in the theater. Boy Diver Paralyzed. Charles Newman, 19, who fractured one of his cervical vertebrae in diving into shal low water on Ross Island several weeks ago, is still in a critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital. The boy practically is paralyzed. Formerly a good athlete, he has been reduced to a skeleton during'his long fight for life. Extension Classes to Meet. Mrs. Mable Holmes Parsons, professor of English in the University of Oregon, will meet all who desire extension work in English at 8 o'clock tonight, in room B of the Library. At this time Mr. Parsons will also consult with all who desire other correspondence courses offered by the. university. School Rally to Be Held Today. The adult, senior and junior depart ments of the Sunday school of the First Presbyterian Church will hold a rally tonight at 7:30 o'clock. The primary and beginners will have a gala hour on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock Even the cradle roll will be represented. Policemen Going on Hunt. Police Captain Inskeep left yesterday with Patrolmen Gouldstone and Russell for a hunting and fishing trip on Mount Hood. The officers will make the trip by automobile, returning for work to night. Usually in the past there has been a certain personal aloofness about him that has almost verged at times upon hauteur, but yesterday the burning enthusiasm for his art and the music of the moment, which he has hitherto repressed beneath an Intensely calm exterior, seemed to burst all bounds. "Without a trace of sentimentality. yet with ever-glowing sentiment; with out a hint of extravagance, yet with much more abandon than has been his wont, he Infused a visible fire into his work that made all his playing mem orable." Dr. Loveland, who has been ill for two weeks, was accompaniea oy i" nnyoi- cian. Dr. Theodore Fessler, it was thought by members of the family that the pastor would be unable to go to the conference, but in his anxiety to be present at the meetings in which he is so deeply interested, he decided to attempt the trip. Alleged Thief Poses as Milkman. , Why I'm the milkman," explained a man who was discovered with a bottle in, his hand on the porch of Mrs, W. C. Maxwell's home at 151 North Twenty-second street, Wednesday morning, according to a report made to the police yesterday. He ran when the woman-screamed, and the police believe that he was a Burglar wno masqueraaea as a milkman as a safeguard in case he was discovered at work, or lurking about a house, at an early morning hour. County Institutions Inspected. Led by A. E. Gantenbeln, foreman, the Multnomah County grand jury yester day started on an inspection of county and city institutions preparatory to making a final report before being dis charged at the end of September. The county and city Jails, the county farm and hospital, the detention home and such other institutions as the jurors may desire to see will be inspected and their condition reported to the Circuit Court Pulpit Vacancy Not Filled. At a meeting of the vestry of St. David's Episcopal Church Wednesday night at the home of Dr. S. E. Josephi. the choosing of a rector for the parish was discussed but no decision was reached and so far the successor to Rev. Henry Russell Talbot has not been named. One of the men under consideration is Rev., Robert Suther land Gill, of Salem, who has conducted services at St. David's frequently since Dr. Talbot resigned. Teachers' Reception Tonight. Miss Ruby Shearer, head of the primary de partment of the Portland public schools, will be the principal figure in a recep tion to be given to the teachers of the Oak Grove School by the members of the School Board of that place tonight. A musical programme will precede Miss Shearer's talk. The reception will be held in the school building at Oak Grove Station on the Oregon City car line. Kindergarten Teacher Chosen. Miss Mary F. Ledyard, a prominent kindergarten worker and educator who recently came here from Los An geles, will have charge of the kinder garten department of St. Helen's Hall when the new quarters are built. Miss Ledyard had charge of the kinder gartens of Los Angeles and organized the work in China. Home for Lad Sought. The Asso ciated Charities is interested in finding a home for a boy of 15. Only one case of alleged shoplifting marred Dollar day, according to the police ar rests yesterday. Mrs. Anna Hudson, of The Dalles, was arrested in the Meier &.
