missioner Baker at the City Hall. Each
day he has found a long: waiting list
ahead of him, and before his turn has
come Mr. Baker has been called to
other duties.
Yesterday the persistent visitor ap
peared with a determination. There
was the usual list ahead of him. When
it came noon and there were still some
people waiting, he retired to the cor
ridor and fished his lunch from his
pocket. After eating1 he resumed his
post, and finally was admitted into the
Commissioner's presence.
He had a complaint about having
been underpaid for four hours work.
Mr. Baker obtained more pay for him.

Examinations for Inspectorship Will
Be Held September 2 1. -
To get eligible for the position of
municipal jitney inspector a civil serv
ice examination is to be held September
1 at the City Hall. The examination
will be open to all persons having re
sided in the city for one year or more.
The position pays $100 a month.
In the test 25 points out of 100 will
be given for experience and references,
25 points for knowledge of city ordi
nances. 20 points for knowledge of
motors and 30 points for mechanical
ability. The position is held now on
temporary appointment by Inspector
Gallup.
Two Automobiles Stolen.
Thefts of two automobiles were re
ported to the police Thursday. George
Grumell, 367 Chapman street, reported
that his machine had been taken frum
Portland boulevard and Vancouver ave
nue. H. C Huntinston said his auto
mobile had been stolen from Fifth and
Oak streets.
