This was said to be due to increased pressure of bills against foreign buy ers of American goods, presented for payment here. Almost without excep tion the bills, were for war supplies. Although the situation waa regarded as acute at the day's close. New lork bankers were not fearful of the future. What is needed here, they said, to recti fy rates is the establishment of a big foreign credit. This would come shortly, they thought, inasmuch as a deputation of British bankers and trea sury department representatives woultf sail for this country to work out a plan of relief.
