GARAGE MEN TO PARADE
Line or 100 Cars With Banners Will
Advertise Picnic
To advertise a picnic that ia to be
held under Its auspices at Gladstone
Park next Thursday. the Portland
Garage and Repairmen's Association
will conduct a parade through the
streets of Portland tonight, commenc
ing at 7:10 o'clock. It is expected
that nearly 100 automobiles will be
in line when the parade forms at East
Twelfth street and Holladay avenue.
All cars will be decorated with ban
ners advertising the coming picnic.
The line of ir.arch will be west on
Holladay to Grand to Hawthorne,
across the Hawthorne bridge to Third
street, to Morrison, to Nineteenth, to
Alder, to Broadway, disbanding at
Broadway bridge.
Gold Medal Awarded to Dr. Blue.
"WASHINGTON. Aug. 20. Trustees of
the American Medicine Gold Medal
Award have unanimously selected Surgeon-General
Blue, of the Public Health
Service, as the American physician who
haa done most for humanity in the do
main of medicine during 1911.
ARB0RER TO AID IN FIGHT
Experts Will Give Advice In Cam
paign on Elm-Leaf Beetle.
As the first step in a campaign to
exterminate the elm-leaf beetle, which
is reported to be destroying elm trees
in the city, an arborer of the Oregon
Agricultural College will arrive in
Portland today for a general inspec
tion. This expert will confer with Park
Superintendent Convill on the subject
of a campaign of spraying. A form of
spray has been selected and an effort
will be mae within a day or two to
get an appropriation to cover the cost
of obtaining pumps and men to oper
ate them.
F. E. Blackwood-West, an ento
mologist, of Portland, also has offered
assistance in the crusade.
. Woodland Enveloped by Smoke.
WOODLAND, Wash., Aug. 20. (Spe
cial.) Wliile no serious fires have been
reported in this vicinity, or at any near
point-between here and the coast, the
air is so heavily charged with smoke
that objects a few hundred yards dis
tant cannot be distinguished and tiie
sun shines a dull yellow. The ther
mometer has not been higher than 88
degrees, but dense smoke has made the
weather sultry.
