ARB0RER TO AID IN FIGHT Experts Will Give Advice In Cam paign on Elm-Leaf Beetle. As the first step in a campaign to exterminate the elm-leaf beetle, which is reported to be destroying elm trees in the city, an arborer of the Oregon Agricultural College will arrive in Portland today for a general inspec tion. This expert will confer with Park Superintendent Convill on the subject of a campaign of spraying. A form of spray has been selected and an effort will be mae within a day or two to get an appropriation to cover the cost of obtaining pumps and men to oper ate them. F. E. Blackwood-West, an ento mologist, of Portland, also has offered assistance in the crusade. . Woodland Enveloped by Smoke. WOODLAND, Wash., Aug. 20. (Spe cial.) Wliile no serious fires have been reported in this vicinity, or at any near point-between here and the coast, the air is so heavily charged with smoke that objects a few hundred yards dis tant cannot be distinguished and tiie sun shines a dull yellow.
