Hurlng the period that the Canal has been empty, ftancs of men have been scattered alone the entire stretch of more than aeven miles, making re- pa Irs in the concrete where fissures appeared when water was first intro duced, while advantage has been taken ot the lock being closed to do other work to place them In the best of condition for the season. Imrlng the interim, freight moving by waer for Upper Columbia points aa far aa t'aaco and Kennewtck has been taken to the Dig Kudy and there handled to Celllo over tha State Port ace Railroad and reloaded on the Twin Cities for tbe Interior. It Is said that there are approximately 2000 sacks of wheat held at Celllo for Portland This Is tha new crop that has bee shipped from rlrer points for Port land. But was not sent over the port age because the steamer J. N. Tea operating between the Big Eddy an Portland, ha been hard pressed tak Ing care of freight for The Dallea and way landings. In addition to transport ing shipment destined for tha Upper Columbia, that were unloaded at th Big Kddy. Tha movement of wheat Is expected to be general from now on. The As tori Flour Mill Company has arranged to charter the eteumer Annie Coming lor service between Astoria and Upper Columbia points. v bile she haa not actually been taken over, terms have been agreed on and It Is the under standing that tbe service starts with the re-opening of the canal. A new shaft Is being turned out at San Francisco and may be shipped her early next week. The movement of commodities to the upper river has not been as heavy during the shut-down of the locks as before, but I expected to In crease with a restoration of the recu l.r service. night. It is hoped to have the steamer headed for sea late tonight- The Nevada n arrived Monday after noon with 1170 tona of cargo, and two gangs were employed during the night to commence discharging, more men being added Tuesday. The same day loading waa started with one gang, and yesterday the force waa increased, so there were nine gangs employed. Long shoremen are loading, flour, crosa arms and other freight in the 'tween decks, while others are discharging from the lower bold. The steamer win have 3000 tona of cargo from Portland and 00 tons of salmon from Astoria, and she completes at San Francisco for Charleston and New York, sailing dl rect from the Golden Gate. Matheaon. who waa on the United Stat Engineer Corps tugs Geo. It. Mendell and Araco for over seven year. The E- G. Bateman Is 71 feet Ions;, with a beam of 14 S feet and depth of hold of 4.S feet. She was in the paa enger trade on s.'iort river route for a time after being built, and. being a propeller type, proved handy. Captain Mathecon say. the Bateman Is to ba used temporarily. It being Intended ta place another veel In service after the Weatport-Aitorla trade I fully estab lished. RIDGKFIELD, Wash.. Aug. The new Government dredge Monticello. which waa recently sent to Lewis River, near this place, is making excellent progress In dredging the Lewis River channel. The dredge has already cut the channel to two feet, and lust soon aa a sufficient relief la made to enable the steamers the Metlako and tha La Center to make the polnta of Woodland and La Center, the dredge will shift to the Cowlitz River to clear tha channel temporarily, so that ves sels can resume navigation during the low-water stage. The d.-edge Is engaged In the north fork of the Lewis River, thia side of Woodland, handling from 600 to 600 yards of material a day. BIG SCHOONER IS PROJECTED Aberdeen Stork Company Is Being Formed to Bnlld Vessel. ABERDEEN'. Wastu. Aug. 18. (Spe cial.) Plans are afoot here for the organization of a company to build lumber schooner of 2.000.000 feet ca pacity, and which will cost 1100.000. W. H. McWhlnney. a retired Aberdeen shipbuilder, is promoting the project. A number of Aberdeen capitalists have promised to take stock and outside capitalists. It is believed, can be in terested. If the company is organized the ship will be built at the Lindstrom marine yards here, for which Mr. MeWhinney has the promise of a low-priced lease. That coal and wood dealers and other vendors of goods In La Grande have been short-weighing and short measuring is the charge of J. A. Yeager. Eastern Oregon deputy sealer of weights and measures, . who has been working quietly In this and Wallowa County. No prosecution will be made now, but Mr. Yeager declarea the matter will be laid before the October grand jury. President Albers, of the Cbeha lis Automobile Club, and Secretary Mc Donald, of the Citizens' Club, are mak ing out details for the run of the local organization to Pacific County points for tbe week-end. The motorists plan to drive from Chehalis to South Bend late Friday afternoon and spend the night in that city. A reception has been planned. Saturday morning the party will go by boat to Tokeland, where the day will Include a banquet on the shore. It is possible the drive home may be made along the beach to Grays Harbor.
