Of Interesting Facts No. 24
Our entire building is as well protected against fire as any in
the United States. This means not only the safety of the building
but the safety of the public.
The automatic sprinkler sys
- tern we have installed is the
most modern in existence and
contains ten miles of wrought
iron pipes, ten tons of fittings,
4200 sprinkler heads and 100
gate and check valves. The
heads are fused to release the
water from the pipes at a cer
tain degree of heat.
The sprinkler supervisory is
so arranged that the equipment
cannot be tamDered with in any
way. For instance: Should the water in the pressure tanks be
come low, an alarm is turned in. Should anyone attempt to close
a gate valve, an alarm is turned in. Should a fire occur or the
wires become disconnected, an alarm is turned in at the central
reporting station and immediately an inspector is on the ground.
The automatic sprinkler, therefore. Is a grood fire watchman, one
who never sleeps and whose fire buckets are always full.
Mr. Joseph P. Gray, president of the Boston Mfg. Mutual Fire In
surance Co.. In a recent report, says that never has a life been lost
Is a properly sprinklered building.

Report Asked of Those Who Plan to
Tour Columbia Highway.
Each of the machines that line up in
front of the Hotel Benson next Thurs
day morning at 7 o'clock for the dedi
cation trip over the lower Columbia
River Highway will carry a banner des
ignating it one of the official cars.
Those who contemplate the trip
should inform the secretary. W. D. B.
Dodson, 69 Fifth street, so that neces
sary arrangements can be made for
them.
It is necessary for the committee to
know the exact number and the names
of those who go, so Clatskanie and
other way points en route who are
providing entertainment and lunches
can have ample time to make arrange
ments. Julius I Meier, president of the
Columbia Highway Association, under
whose auspices the trip will Ibe made,
has been in communication with the
county Judges of both Clatskanie and
Columbia counties and wherever neces
sary the County Commissioners have
sent supervisors over the road to re
pair bad stretches so the excursion
may be made pleasantly.
