Fire Warden Elijah Walman probably prevented a serious forest fire in Southwest Hood River County Wednesday, when he sighted smoke from his lookout on Mount Hood and gave an alarm. The fire warden noti fied the Stanley-Smith Lumber Com pany, and a " crew of firellghtera waa dispatched to the scene. Blackberry pickers probably- had started the flames, which were licking up the logging flume of the company and beginning to spread in the slash ings of the logged-off land. The Union High School law, as it existed prior to May 22, 1915. will be tested in the Circuit Court Monday when a demurrer in the case of the State of Oregon against Clackamas County, known as the Gladstone Union High School case, will be argued before Judge Campbell. The plaintiff alleges that the 1915 amendment to the law is ambiguous and that the entire statute is made in valid.
