A new rate for the ehlpment of grain from the Faclnc Co, to South Africa waa set yesterday In the announcement that SI. It Houser had nd the French ahlp Ernest Reyer to load wheat tor South African porta at 10 shillings. This la the Brat vessel announced thus far to have been booked for thla ioh'i loading for South Africa. Ves sels for last season's loading received a rate of from 2Vs d to 40a. The rate on the Krnest Reyer Is as kl.h a that nxed for J""0"" grain to Kurope In spite of the frora submarines In those waters. 1" rates thus far for the Kuropean trip ranges from to shillings to Oram steamers for this seasons load ing for Kurope are receiving ro"d tS shillings. Among those recently chartered at that rate Is the British ateamer Readme, which baa been booked by Strauss & Co. and will carry grain to Kurope. One reason for the high rate given the Krnest Reyer Is that the vessel will be available for early loading. Phe arrived at San Francisco from Newcastle. New South Wales. July . and should be able to start for Fort land In a short time. The addition of the Krnest Reyer mskes a grain fleet of 43 T"9e, no booked for this season s loading at this port. VESSEL HAS NARROW ESCAPE Steam Schooner Saginaw O raxed by Great Northern Off Coast. FAX FRANCISCO. Aug. 1. (Special.)
