BIG STEAMERS HERE
Eureka, lowan and Santa Ce
cilia to Load in Port.
CARGOES WILL BE VARIED
"Wheat, Lumber, Flour, Wool, Rub
ber and Salmon Are to Be Taken
On for New York General
, Cargo Will Be Discharged.
The American steamer Eureka will
arrive in Portland today to take on
wheat and lumber for Baltimore. The
vessel will load wheat for M. H. Houeer.
She has Just undergone extensive re
pairs at Seattle.
The American-Hawaiian line steamer
lowan, which makes the regular run
from New York to Western ports by
way of the Panama Canal, arrived in
port yesterday, and the Grace liner
Fanta Cecilia, also on the run from New
York, came into port early this morn
ing. The arrival of the Eureka conse
quently will mean three large steamers
in Portland harbor at the same time
taking on cargo for Eastern porta.
The Eureka will first tie up at the
Irving dock, where she will take an
under-deckload of wheat. The British
bark Amulree, now at the Irving dock,
will be shifted downstream to make
room for the steamer. After the wheat
bas been loaded the steamer will drop
down the river to Wauna. where a
deckload of lumber will be taken on.
Repair Delay Vessel.
The Eureka, which is commanded by
Captain Guptill. was due in Portland
about July 5. Repairs, however, de
layed her. She is a vessel of 1399 tons.
The lowan was brought into port
from Astoria by Captain Moran, of the
river pilots. She tied up at Albers
Dock No. 3 and wilt discharge about
1500 tons of general cargo. She will
take on about TOO tons of miscellane
ous cargo at this port and will then
drop down the river to Astoria, where
she will take on about 600 tons of
canned goods. She will then proceed
to Seattle and Tacoma before making
the return trip to New York City.
Varied Cargo to Be Taken.
The Santa Cecilia arrived from Pu
get Sound, where she had taken on
several thousand tons of freight, in
cluding a shipment of copper. She will
take on flour, wool and old rubber at
Municipal Dock No. 1 this morning.
She will also take on lumber, salmon
and other cargo to about 1000 tons.
The Santa Cecilia had originally in
tended to proceed from Puget Sound
to. South America for a cargo of ni
trates, but a revocation of an order
brought her to Portland.
Terminal yards to Get Gravel.
A couple of barge loads of gravel
will be transferred to cars at the new
slip at the north end of Municipal Dock
No. 1 today by the Pacific Bridge Com
pany for use in filling in around the
terminal yards. The slip, with the rail
road switch alongside, makes it pos
sible to transfer gravel directly from
barge to car. This will- be the first
time, it Is said, that the new slip has
been used in that manner for unloading
gravel.
Heavy Eea Encountered.
Passengers on the Great Northern,
that arrived at Klavel yesterday from
San Francisco, had the opportunity of
seeing an exceptionally heavy Summer
sea. The steamer began to roll just
after leaving the Golden Gate, and
when Hearing Point Arena she ran
headlong into an 80-mile gale, accord
ing to passengers who arrived in Port
land last evening.
