HALF OF LAST YEAR'S Harry Hart Buys 2100 Bales, Solid Trainload, of Del Paso Sacra men tos for Immediate Shipment to London. All doubt as to the serious condition of the Enrlish hop crop was dispelled yester day by the receipt of a cablegram from the Kentish Observer, published at Canterbury, England, In the heart of the English hop Browlnr district, which -estimated the grow ing crop at 250,000 cwt. The conservative character of the paper and its means for knowing exact conditions make its estimate, which la absolutely unbiased, a valuable one. A crop of 250,000 cwt. would be the smallest England has produced since J909. Last year the crop was 607,258 cwt. Further confirmation of the serious con dition of the English crop Is found In, the sharp advance or the London market yes terday. From 80100 shillings, the former quotation on Pacific, the price jumped to 3112 shillings per- cwt. This is equiv alent to 34 cents a pound advance on the lower grades and 2 14 cents a pound ad vance on the best. The new prices, re duced to American money, are 20.16 cents a pound for low-grades and 24 cents for choice. Export buyers were Industrious In the country yesterday, with offers of 12 cents for new-crop Oregons, but so far as known met with little success. In California business opened up again with a rush and with evidence of renewed strength. The most Important deal put through yesterday, in fact the largest single transaction for the past year, was the pur chase of the remainder of the Del Paso Hop Company's holdings of Sacramento hops of last year's growth. The purchaser was H. L. Hart, of this city. There are 2100 bales in the lot, a solid trainload, and the hops will be shipped direct to London. The price paid was 12 cents. Another California ealo was the Wellls Bros, crop of 100 bales of spot Sacramentos to Donovan at 13 cents.. Offers on con tract were freely made at 12 cents. OFFERINGS OF WHEAT ALMOST CEASE Only Demand Is for Forty-fold, and That Is Moderate. -There were almost no sellers of wheat at the Merchants Exchange yesterday. Blue stem was offered for August and Septem ber delivery, but sellers did not think it worth while to offer anything else. There was but little demand except for forty fold, for which OO cents was bid for all deliveries, a price considerably better than was offered the day before. For red wheat of all kinds and all months SO cents was again bid. There was a uniform price of $24 for spot and future oats. As is the case with wheat, farmers are not offering oats or barley. Rolled barley prices have been advanced $1 a ton, as the Inttrlor has stopped selling the old crop and new barley Is not yet coming In. Since July 1 barley receipts have been only 560 tons. In the same period last year the receipts were 4305 tons. Arrivals of oats since the first of the month have been 1323 tons, and in the corresponding period last year 19,420 tons. Shipments of wheat from India for the week were 1,408.000 bushels, compared with 2.040,000 bushels last week "and 1.31U.0UU bushels a year ago. Terminal receipts. In reviewing the strong hide market con ditions in the East, the following late Chi cago advices are of interest: "The domestic packer hide market keeps In as strong and advancing a position as ever, with latest trading in branded de scriptions at a further H-cent advance and middle of June to middle of July native steers sold up to 26 cents. Heavy native cows of similar takeoff command the same figure, and packers are reluctant about offering straight July native steers, de manding up to at least 26 14 cents for these. Around 40,000 branded hides of late salting have changed hands at the rise noted above, comprising 10.000 heavy Texas steers of July kill at the advanced figure of 2314 cents, 3000 butt brands, late June and July takeoff at 23 cents, and about 23,000 July Colorados at 22c. The unsold stocks of packer hides of previous to July kill are exceedingly light. "Country hides continue very firm, but there is not so much strength shown In these as In packer takeoff, which condition has prevailed for a long time past. Short haired buffs, heavy cows and heavy steers are all quotable at 21 cents, and even more Is talked for lots guaranteed free of grubs, while long and mixed-haired lots range 19 cents to 2014 cents, asked as to salting quality, etc. "Calfskins, East and West, have developed considerable strength recently. Best Chi cago cities have sold up to 2114 cents, with outside cities freely taken at 21 cents, and some choice lots are held up to 2114 cents and even 22 cents. Country skins range around 19 cents to 1914 cents, and kips are considered quotable on the same basia." RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY ADOPTED Merchants Exchange fays Tribute to Mem ory of Kobert Kennedy. At a special meeting of the Merchants Exchange Association yesterday the fol lowing resolution was adopted: "Whereas. Robert Kennedy has been taken by death from the scene of his activities in this vicinity; and "Whereas. In his long career in Port land as a factor in the Pacific Northwest, and Oregon in particular, he has endeared himself to all his associates and acquain tances, and the members of this association deeply feel their loss: be It "Resolved, That this body Is profoundly sorrowful for the loss this community sus tained, and for the severing of the pleas ant ties of fellowship that have existed with the departed. The members of this association therefore wish to express to the relatives their sympathy in this hour of bereavement." rRriT SALES CLOSELY CLEANED UP. Continued Warm Weather Stimulates Front Street Trade. The continued warm - weather enables Front street houses to keep their stocks of green fruit closely cleaned up. and as a consequence prices ere very steady. The first carioad of Furlock cantaloupes arrived yesterday. In the coming week this district will be a regular shipper and a better quality of fruit will therefore be available. Watermelons continue In brisk demand. Peaches, both Oregon and California, were plentiful yesterday and sold at unchanged prices. Demand for Eggs Is Lighter. The demand for eggs has been checked since the warm weather returned and In It. - - ...... ssasssssssaBBBBBSasSBSsaaaaaaaaaWK "--" quarters on tne street there Is an ac cumulation. This, with the irregularity In the quality of the eggs now coming forward, makes for a poor market. Poultry sold at former prices. The de mand for hens was good, but Springs dragged. TOTAL TRANSACTIONS LESS Railroad Shares Are More Promi nent, but at Kjnonse of Val ues International Condi tions Cause Hesitation. NEW TORK, July 23. So far as actual results were concerned, today1! stock market was largely a. repetition of the days Imme diately preceding. There was a further downward revision of some of the war spe cialties, to which Bethlehem Steel common and preferred proved the most notable ex ceptions, the tormer repeating Its recent high quotation of 2"4 and the latter making a new high at 125. Baldwin Locomotive aHo broke into new ground at 7714. A few other industrials and equipments, partici pating more or less actively In profitable war contracts, rose and fell within compar atively narrow limits. Railroad stocks were more prominent, but almost wholly at the expense of quoted values. Shares like St. Paul, Canadian Pa cific, Southern Railway preferred and Texas Pacific descended to lowest prices In years. St. Paul's minimum of 78 being the record since 1808. All the carriers in the Southern and Southwestern sections of the country were heavier at declines of 1 to 4 points. Actual new low prices -were established by Missouri pacific, at 21.; Seaboard Air Line preferred, at 801i; Rock Island, at 1014. and Norfolk & Western, at 17. The chief factor in connection with the heaviness of the Southern stocks was the discouraging cotton outlook, resulting from the war, together with unfavorable earn ings. Cotton options . were mostly higher, however, in response to an urgent demand for the staple from foreign sources. Dealings were the lightest of any recent session, the overturn in the specialties be ing from one-fourth to one-half under that of the midweek. Baldwin Locomotive, Westinghouse and American Can, together with United States Steel, made up one-third of the total 475.000 shares. International conditions, particularly the Impending reply of this Government to Ger many, furnished the basis for much of the day's hesitation. There were no developments of Interest In the markets for foreign exchange. The probable success of the new Canadian note offering by our bankers threw some light on tho investment inquiry. Monetary con ditions were unchanged except for a more free acceptance of industrial collateral loans. Bonds were Irregular, with a renewal of foreign selling. Total sales, par value, ag gregated $1,655,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sales. High. Low. Dunn's Review will ay: Apart from the development of furthef labor controversies, the general situation maintains Its favorable aspects. Recent set tlement of the trouble in the building trades In the West has been followed by the ad justment of the local clothing strike but fresh disturbances have arisen here and 'else where, notably at oil plants In New Jersey Differences between employers and wage earners, however, are not yet sufficiently widespresd to seriously interfere with the progress of manufacture and distribution al though the unsettled conditions make' for increased conservatism In some directions. It Is not the sesson for the tide of busi ness to rise, but there are Indications of a well-sustained volume of transactions In various commercial and Industrial lines. Not the least significant of these Is the steady, upward trend of commodity prices. Most products are gaintng in value because of the urgent foreign demands, but in some In stances domestic consumption Is also broad ening. Except for essentially hot weather mer chandise, recent high temperatures had the usual effect of retarding the retail move ment, yet bank clearings at outside cities this week were again slightly larger than sst year's, whl'e with New Tork Included. the gain was 8.5 per cent. Returns of railroad earnings do not mske the same favorable comparison, but these are gradually Increasing. EASTERN WOOL MARKET IS BRISKER Prices Are Ruling Very Firm AU Around Kt Boston. BOSTON.
