Portland can well sympathize with "Humpty Dumpty" because our local ; ball athletes lost two games in one afternoon to Los Aigeles yesterday and almost dropped out of the Coast League "Pop" Billon's double win i cent the Angela home with four games J of the five in the series and only two I games from the Seals. ; : The score of the first game was 2-1 and of the second 9-2. ; The initial engagement was a pitch ing battle between Southpaw Lush and Pol" Perritt. Harry Wolter won the game In the eighth inning because of his Inability to bunt. McMullen began . the fateful stanza by placing a single i " to center, with the score a 1-1 stand off. Wolter tried twice to sacrifice ; him to second base, and, failing in ; this, took a healthy wallop at 'one of ; J Lush's benders and banged it for two bases into deep right center. His ; ; double scored McMullen and clinched the game. Nearly 4000 fans were out basking in the warm sunshine and everybody enjoyed the' initial duel. The other should have been fumigated. A patent : clothespin over the nose would have !. relieved the sufferings of consldera- I I bly more than that portion of the pop ' i ulace on good speaking terms with ; Mr. H. Fever. : Slim Dad Hughes made the erst while champions look like sure enough simians and the contrast between the ex-Washingtonian and the ex-Cleve- - . lander, Kahler, was almost as sharp J as between a gnu and a wurra wurra. When the tally sheet showed 7-0 in the Angels favor along about the ;- eighth inning, Walt McCredie threw Bobby Keefe at the Seraphs. This move seemed to please Harl Maggert immensely because Harl immediately drove one of Robert's chucks high and dry over the right field fence for a . 1 homo run. Singles by McMullen and Wolter and a sacrifice fly added an other run, making it 9-0 and half the ; crowd headed elsewhere. 1 Portland scored both Its runs in the last of the ninth. Observing Captain Speas. as he stalled to bat. some wise wag in the stand shouted out: "The Portland team is now at bat," and this seemed to inspire the boys. He should have hollered ' sooner. Speas came through with a single ; to center; Bates batted him along to : third by a two-bagger to the same ' , ppot, and both scored on Stumpfs two- ; bagger. Then the lid clanged down like one of those drawbridges they used to have over the moats in "Pop" Dillon's early - days. - While Kahler's pitching was not so -- bad, his work in other departments ,-. . -was hardly in keeping with a big :"' leaguer. Evidently Joe Birmingham Tiever taught Kahler how to back up " bases. His most palpable omission was in failing to get behind Carlsch when Ellis was trapped between third and home in the eight Inning. Ellis finally wormed past Carisch, and, lo and behold, there was nary a soul at the home-plate to take a throw and Ellis waltzed over in high glee. Portland had plenty of chances in both frame to score runs but things weren't breaking for them. In the first Inning of the second affair the Beavers had the bags full and ready' for business whereupon Walter Doane ' permitted himself to slumber off third. ! '. We cite this not as a rap at Doane , I but merely as evidence of one reason ',' why the champions averaged only 1.6 " ' runs per game during the disastrous series Just completed. Several of the boys surprised them ; selves by star plays in both games. Ellis pulled one of Speas' drives oft : r the lett-field fence in the curtain i raiser. McMullen, Speas, Terry and !
