The opening event was a long pa rade, which was organized by Sunday schools, churches and fraternal organ izations and was made up of attrac tive little floats, drill teams and other features. The parade moved along Lombard street from Portsmouth etreet to the park, where all the floats and teams were lined np in the wide crass arena Here competitive drilling was held for prizes. In the afternoon the celebration opened with patriotic exercises, at which Governor Withycombe and City Commissioner Baker were the principal speakers. "It is true that mothers do not raise their boys to be soldiers, but they do raise them to be patriotic citizens, which requires that they be soldiers if occa sion demands." Commtsisoner George Baker made an appeal for patriotism now and when the Liberty Bell comes to Portland. Music was furnished -by the Park Band and by the Grand Army Quartet, con sisting of J. S. Hamilton, F. M. Varner, Philip Powlson and J. G. Chambers. The Declaration of Independence was read by Miss Margaret Nelson. The crowd of several thousand persons sang "America" and other patriotic songs. HONOR IS PAID FLAG BY'ALL ("Continued From First Page. local population in celebrating. The artistic floats in the parade of the morning were the best ever seen in this city. Hpse congests were partici pated in by members of the local fire company and those of The Dalles. The climax of the day came this afternoon, when a baseball game between Hood River and. White Salmon was umpired hy Billy Sunday, whose characteristic .gestures in announcing decisions were frequently greeted with cheers. The game resulted in a victory of J to 0 in favor of the local team. "It was one of the best I have ever seen," announced the evangelist at the close. By actual count 1110 people saw the game, by far the largest crowd ever assembled at a local athletic event here. GERMANS ARE IN" EVIDENCE Majority of 15,000 Celebrants at Ilillsboro "Are Teutons. HILLSBORO. Or, July 5. (Special.) Fully 15,000 persons participated in the celebration in this city today and a large percentage of the attendants were of German extraction. Mayor Barrett was the Bpeaker of the day and his address was replete with pa triotism. He paid a tribute to the foreign-born people of Washington county who had been a great factor in making it the greatest producing county acreage in the Northwest. T-fie Mayor contrasted America with its peace to war-torn Europe, and held that it was the duty of every American to hasten the day of cessation of hos tilities; he lauded President Wilson for his peace policy, and said Chat while he differed from him in politics he considered him one of the greatest of American presidents. Miss Leonora Gardner was Goddess of Liberty and was attended by Miss Margaret Mann and Miss Lucile Collier. The civic parade contained 35 floats and was the best in the history of the city. Chief of the attractions were the two flight by Munlter. the aviator, and the baseball game between Cornelius and Verboort, which resulted in a vic tory for Cornelius 5 to 0. All passenger trains to the city were congested, and the Southern Pacific from Corvallis this morning found it necessary to return to Cornelius to take in its load of passengers. GIRL WINS IN BOYS' SWIM NEWPORT HAS DIG DAY WITH WATER AND FIELD SPORTS. Coastguard Give Exhibition Masked Dance Held on Streets. Ors tory Sqaelebed bf Mayor. NEWPORT. Or, July 5. (Special.) Perhaps only the- presence of the Liberty Bell itself could have attracted a larger Crowd to Newport to honor the anniversary of Independence tiay. The programme was 24 hours long. Including a ball at the Rod and Gun Club, and its unique features banished fatigue and warmed enthusiasm. Anna May Hall, a 13-year-old girl, made the biggest hit of the day in the boys' swimming race. Unable to find any girls who would swim against her this athletic nymph challenged the boys and came in second, using a swift Australian crawl stroke. The applause for her feat was deafen ing. The other water and Held sports were good, a pie-eating contest making the most merriment. The patriotic ad dress to have been delivered by W. K- Gwynn was called off by Mayer Bensell, master of ceremonies, because the audience had not assembled on time. The Mayor's impatience brought severe criticism upon him from all sides, but his venerable age of 75 years prevented any violent demonstration. The Taquina Bay Coast Guards, under Anton Gustafson, gave a splendid cap size 3rill. but Captain Stuart, who re mained on shore, would not pexmit the beach or cannon drill, owing to severe criticism of his exhibition during the Oddfellows' grand lodge meeting in May. At night the mask carnival on the streets, the burning of a miniature battleship on Yaqulna Baf and Slletz Indian dances completed, the entertain ment. . The schedule of outgoing trains was arranged to allow visitors a full day, and week-end tickets were extended until Tuesday. The entertainment was provided for by donations" from resi dents of the bay side of Newport. The committee in charge consisted of F. B. Davis, E. D. Craig and Joseph Patter eon. 17,000 IX EUGENE FOR DAY Parade Almost Two Miles Loiiff and No One I Hurt or Arrested. EUGENE, Or.. July S. (Special.) The Eagle screamed louder in Eugene today than it has for years, and up to tonight no one has been injured. Thousands from all over Lane County took part in the celebration, and it is estimated that 17.000 persons wit nessed a parade almost two miles long. "Special .trains brought the peo ple here this morning and took them home tonight. Among the athletic events today was a tug-of-war between the Com mercial Club and the Atlas Club, in which five business men pulled five boys into the mill race. The police made no arrests during the day. Children' Perform at Greshnm. . GRESHAM. Or., July 5. (Special.) One of the largest crowds ever assem bled in Gresham thronged to the Fair grounds today for the celebration given by the Gresham firemen. Slapleton deliv ered the oration and Mnt O. J. Brown sang a patriotic song. An attractive flower drill was given by the girls and a flag drill by the boys.
