After losing all week, Oakland turned and won two games from Portland yes terday and the old town will need to day's respite, to get back to normal. Both engagements were thrillers re plete with Bpectacular. brilliant ma neuvers, and curiously, both closed with 4-3 scores. The afternoon name proved costly to both teams, as Infielders Mar can of .the Oaks and Davis of Port land suffered injuries that likely will keep them out of the game for the coming series. The morning- game, witnessed by 1200 souls, went 11 innings, and was the most freaky affair of the season. Krause led 2-0 up to the ninth when "Rowdy" Elliott injected himself into the game as a pinch hitter and hit the ball over the left field fence In the general direction of the Philippines for a psychological home run. Ness' Record Saved. Elliott's swat tied the score 2-2 and was all that saved Jack Ness" consecu tive batting record. Ness had gone hitless up to the eleventh inning of this morning's game. In this never-to-be-forgotten stanza, with runners on first and third and the score 3-3, McCredle gave Rube Evans orders to walk Ness, and if Evans had gone through with it Ness would not now be exulting over 84 consecutive games of hitting. Evans started to obey his manager's orders but must have got his wires twisted. After serving up two balls he lobbed one too close to the plate, and Ness reached over and pasted it between first and second bases for a single, sending Manda home with the winning tally. This is only about half of the ex citement of that frenzied forenoon fi asco. Krause had the Oaks feeding out of his blisters up to the ninth inning. Only one hit had been chalked against him and it looked like a cinch bet for a 2-0 finish, when Guest's grounder took a bad hop over Davis head and went for three bags and .enabled El liott to tie the game with his homer. Beavers Tie In Tenth. As if this were not enough the Oaks scored one run in the tenth on hits by Gardner and Litschi and Portland came right back in the last of the Inning with another tying run. McCredie rushed out two pinch hit ters, and both came through nobly. Fisher doubled to left and Doane scored him with a triple Texas leaguer down the foul line. In the afternoon Doane belted out another pinch hit, so It was quite a day for the shifty out fielder. Southpaw Abies started this game for the Oaks, but was relieved by Klawitter in the ninth, and Klawitter took the credit of winning. It was his first win of the week, after three disastrous starts. The afternoon game. witnessed by 4700 paid admissions, was not quite co brimful of fire and cayenne, but its finish was exciting enough to stir up more noise than an Italian army corps eating sphagetti. With the bases full and the score 4-2 in favor of Oakland, Bill Stumpf laced a screaming line hit into left field in the ninth, and if Howard Drew had been on second instead of Bobby Davis Portland would have won the game. As it was, Doane scored from third base and Davis was nabbed at home by inches on a remarkable throw by Middleton. Davis Is Injured. Davis wrenched his knee sliding Into Elliott, or there might have been a riot. Umpire Kinney's decision prob ably was correct, but it was eo close and the crowd so worked up that one could have expected almost anything. Doane knocked out his second pinch hit in this frame, and a walk to Davis and Derrick's scratch hit conspired to fill the bags for the final dramatic play. Luck was much against the Beavers all through the day. for Johnston and Gardner also cut runners down at the home plate by wonderfully accurate throws from the outfield. Southpaws Lush and Remneas opened aa rival flingers. but Remneas gave way to Dutch Klawitter late in the game. and Dutch finished. Lush pitched good ball, as two of the Oak tallies were the result of an error by Bates. Marcan's Injury occurred In the sixth Inning when he twisted a ligament in his ankle tagging Hillyard at second base. Dr. J. D. Sternberg, who at tended both him and Davis, said Mar can's injury was not at all serious, but it would require an X-ray photo to determine definitely the extent of Davis' knee wrench. "I dcn't think he will be out more than 10 days at the limit.' said he. Oakland left for home last night with three games of the eight played. Yesterday's scores: Morning same: Oakland Portland. Venice took two games from the league leaders today, winding up a nine-game series, of which San Francisco won Ave. The morning game, played in Oakland, found Tyler Christian, ex-manager of the Oak land team, on the mound for the Seals. He was forced to give way to Fanning, however, and Venice won 5 to 3. Costly boots at critical times by Cor- han and Meloan, coupled with heavy hitting by the Venetians, spelled a 7-to-1 defeat for the Seals In the after noon game, played on this side of the bay.
