LINCOLN PARK PLANS PLAY

; The Fourth of July will be cele
brated Monday t Lincoln Park by a
treneral pror&ramme of sports. In which
the public generally will participate.
The morning: will be devoted to athletic
tests on the apparatus for which the
boys and girls are awarded park em
blems. In the afternoon there will be
drills by the girls, a track and field
meet for both boys and 8lrls. with
comic events, followed by match games
and free play.
A feature of the celebration will be
a family relay race In which each child,
mother and father each runs a relay.
Many of those participating will be of
foreigrn parentage. The programme Is
In the hands of the park directors. Miss
Ada Hall and David Brace.
The Albina Homestead Parent-Teacher
Association will hold weekly meet
ing's In the park, when all will Indulge
in games. .

sion, county auditors of Washington
have ended their three days' conven
tion here, electing the following offi
cers: President, J. W. Monfort. Lowis
County; first vice-president. Miss Annie
Gaston. Thurston Connty: second vice
president. C T. Sanders. Grant County,
secretary, A. R. Met. Whitman County.
NEW LIBRARY IS IN USE
Sell wood Branch Moves Into Mod
ern Quarters.
The new home for the tell wood
Branch Library, erected on Nehalem
avenue and East Fifteenth street, was
occupied Thursday for the first time.
In honor of the occasion the weekly
conference of the Portland librarians
was held in the new building Thurs
day. There were 16 librarians and
some friends present. Luncheon was
served at noon by Mrs. G. M. Banks.
The library has a capacity of about
2004 books.
The cost of the building was about
13000. It occupies a lot IOOiSO feet.
The Bell wood Library was started aa
a reading room about eight years ago.
and was the first suburban library In
Portland.

CENTRAL! A, Wash.. July J. (Spe
cial.) John Galvln. receiver of the
Union Loan Trunt Co.. yenterday was
ordered by Judge Rico, in Lewis Coun
ty Superior Court, to return to Mrs.
Mary Gilchrist certain papers and war
rants which she filed suit to recover.
Georgo Mason, former cashier of the
trust company, acted as Mrs. Gilchrist's
agent In buying the warrants. He kept
them In a pigeonhole In the bank in
an envelope marked with Mrs. Gil
christ's name. When Mr. Galvln took
charge of the bank's affairs he took
possession of the papers and refused to
give them up unless a court order was
forthcoming.
ELKS' SITE COSTS $107,400
Two Iota at Twelfth and Alder
Street May Hold Pulure Home.
At a valuation of 1107.400 the Port
land lodge of Elks has arranged with
X)t. Charles W. Cornelius for the pur
chase of two 10 by 100 foot lots lo
cated on the northeast corner of
Twelfth and Alder streots. As $54,000
of the payment rr. Cornelius will ac
cept a (0 by 100 foot lot situated on
the southwest corner of Thirteenth
land Tsylar streets.
For the present the Elks will held
the Alder. street property as an Invest
ment, hut It Is possible that the site
will be used se-me day for the erec
tion of a new Elks Tempi to succeed
the prenent quarters at Stark street
and Broadway.

SALEM. Or., July J. (Special ) Su
perintendent of Public Instruction
Churchill has been notified by H. A.
Hlnhw, general frelclit agent of the
Southern Pacific Company, that the
company Is planning In conjunction
with the Orecon Agricultural College
to operate a fruit canning and poultry
demonstration car In the Willamette
Valley, commencing about July 12. Mr.
Churchill Is in hearty sympathy with
this movement, which Is closely allied
to the work which the State Depart
ment of Education la doing through Its
Industrial Club workers, and will as
sist In obtaining the attendance of the
school children at the various points
to bo visited.
