(Special.) ta The 23d annual session of Oregon yearly meeting of the Friends' Church convened here this morning, with a large attendance from Pacific Coast states. Jivangelistic and churcri extension departments reported a successful year, under the leadership of liev. Lindley A. Wells, of Portland, as superintend ent and field evangelist, and with Rev. Homer L. Cox. also of Portland, as chairman of the yearly meeting com mittee. The annual gathering was organized by the election of the following offi cers: Presiding clerk, Levi T. Pen nington, president of Pacific College: recording clerk. Anna W. Benson, of Js'ewberg; reading clerk, Mary Eunice Lewis. of Sprlngbrook; announcing clerk, Eramer A. Newby, of Salem. John Frederick Hanson, recently re turned from Europe, submitted a letter urging efforts for peace, which was forwarded to President Wilson, as fol lows: "We have expressed on former oc casions our appreciation of your wise course and peaceful policy in dealing with international complications. "We wish at this time to express our deep sympathy for our Government in tills time of special trial, believing that patient, persistent moral forces will accomplish the ends for which our Government contends and at the same time vindicate the honor of the Na tion. "We conceive that no greater calam ity can befall our people than to step down from the high plane of Christian endeavor to the low level of physical conflict, upon which we could neither ask nor expect divine favor. Our prayers are with the Oov'ernment and for you personally in this unique crisis." CONVICTS REACH JUNGLE .Kevolt in Panama Penitentiary At tended by l'atal Kesults. ' PANAMA, June 11. Seventeen pris oners confined in the penitentiary at Kan Diego, province of Veragua, re volted today and ten of them made their escape after killing a police lieu tenant and a guard and dangerously wounding five other guards. The men are still at large in the Jungles armed with rifles and revolvers and a large quantity of ammunition which they se cured by breaking into the arsenal. The escaped convicts were serving lifo sentences lor murder. Chicago Carpenters to Arbitrate. CHICAGO. June 11. Union carpen ters, whose strike has tied up building operations here for a month, today agreed to settle their differences with the contractors by arbitration.
