PLANS FOR USE UNCERTAIN 1 mention to Convert Boat Into Sum mer Home Is Abandoned Bout Oft Adrift at Sea luring Years of Service. The Bureau of Lighthouses at Wash ington, D. C, on a bid of $1667.99 made in April, has awarded to A. B. Leve the possession of Hshtvessel No. 60, tne first lloating- navigation aid of the type stationed on the Pacilic Coast. Kobert W'airack, inspector of the 17th lijihthoue district, was officially ad vised that Mr. Leve had won in com petition Willi Portland and I'uset oornd biddel's. Keuai'tliny; his early Intention to convert the old lightvessel into a Sum mer homo, Mr. said yesterday that ho had discarded the notion, and while lie, had not received offers for the ship, was not certain what disposition he would iiiiikc of her, other than that she will be towed to Portland from the Tongue Point buoy station, and on further examination of the hull will depend her future. Bids 1'irst Opened In February. Bids were first opened for the vessel February 16, and at the time Mr. Leve was the highest bidder with a tender of $6:17.98. All proposals were ordered rejected, and a new batch was opened April t. Mr. Leve a".atn took first place with a tender of ltS7.!y. It was not generally known, but there was a plan considered of tow ing the ship to the Atlantic Coast via the Panama Canal, as it was thought she could be refitted on the other side and used as a liyht vessel. No. 50 was turned out by tliT: Union Iron Works and is a composite easel, lier frame is of stool, planking bcniK lastencd to the frames, and the outer skin is cop-pel-. The ship was equipped with sails, navinq no omer power, ana was moored off the entrance to the Colum bia River in May, 18i2. Summer is here in the opinion of Meam boatmen, in spite of the fact J Pluvius has been putting in full time of late, for the excursion steamer Bailey Uatzert inaugurates her daily round trip schedule between Portland and The Dalles today, leaving here at i o clock this morning. That move, following so closely on the resumption of the daily round trip service between Portland and Astoria by the speedy propeller Ucorgiana, is taken by fresh water sailors as proof that the period for vacations is at hand. Sunday the Gatzert leaves at ! o'clock for the Cascade Locks, return ing about 6 in the evening. The same day the Georgiana steams at 7:30 for Astoria, returning to Portland at o'clock in the evening. The Gatzert is In command of Captain Alden, with Tilot Ed. Lyons, while Captain Archie tieer is on the Dalles City, which leaves today at S:30 o clock for The Dalles, and with him as pilot is Captain Tenn Short. VAXtOCVKR WANTS DREDGE Engineer Officers Asked to-Assist In Work on Marine Road. To dredge a channel that will have ruling- depth at zero of 'J5 to 27 feet of water is the aim of commercial in terests at Vancouver, Wash., and formal application for n Government dredge to prosecute the work has been made to Colonel Morrow, Corps of En gineers, TJ. S. A. As there are no dig gers of a suitable type operated in the First Portland district, it was under Mood that Colonel Morrow would refer the application to Colonel McKinstry, in charge or the Second Portland dis tlict. Dykes have been completed at Van couver in connection with the improve mcnt project and it is believed that once a sutiaoie cnannei is provided no trouble will be met with in maintaining it. In the past deep-water vessels have made Vancouver, and being . located Mich a short distance from the main -hip channel it is promised that there will be a resumption of coat shipments from there. NAVARRE LOADS ALL WHEAT Pierre Antonlnc Makes Record Pass ago of Present Season. Approximately 3000 long tons of wheat for Callao will go aboard the Rritish steamer Crown of Navarre, which is due here tomorrow from Se attle and loads at Mersey, Montgomery and Albina docks. She Is consigned to Kalfour, 3uthrie & Co. and Is one of the small Harrison liners. On dis charging at the West Coast port she takes on a nitrate cargo for the At lantic. ' The Merchants' Fxchange was ad vised yesterday that the French bark I'ierre Antonine passed Lizard Tuesday on her way to Queenstown from Port land. She left the river January 23 nnd was 115 days on the way, making the fastest passage of the season. The best previous time this season was 121 days. The Norwegian steamer Chris tian IJors. which left last month with a full grain cargo for Limerick, is re ported arriving at Norfolk yesterday by way of the Cannl. The drcdsre Seattle, of the Puget Sound Jii ldge & Dredge Company, is en gaged in work on the Coquille River, which wns started nt the Moore saw mill, on the outskirts of Bandon. where there is a troublesome shoal. The dredgre is working three crews eight hours each and Rojr K. Miller, super intendent, expects to complete- the ten foot channel to Coquille within-two months or thereabouts. ' In some dis tricts irk the vicinity of Bandon the property owners are organizing fill districts and much of the tideflat area will be elevated. At the Moore mill the channel will be cut to a width of 230 feet. It is be lieved there are sufficient funds to finish the channel to Coquille without issuing bonds. SIX TRAMPS DISPOSED OF Steamers That Have Loaded Here Among Carriers Sold. Six British tramps are numbered with the latest carriers disposed of by their owners and all of them are known on the Coast, one of the "most famil iar of the fleet 19 the Norwegian steamer Rygrja, which operated for a time in the service of the Portland Asiat'c Steamship Company. Shr -was owned at Bergen, Norway, ana has been sold to foreigners. The Frank mount, which has been dispatched from the river, is reported sold to the Can adian Pacific Railroad for approxi mately $460,000. The Strathlyon, of the widely Known "Strath" fleet, is another disposed of, nd she has been taken over by Swed ish interests. The British steamer Farley has been sold for $323,000 and the British steamer Needles is said to have brought $225,00,0. The British steamer Mancunia, loaded on Pueet ound in February, brought $200,000. Higrh freights naturaily have increased values and. with some steamers laid up at British ports because of the war, their owners are -willing to sell, as there are better opportunities for dis posing of them than was the case in advance of the European disturbance. I'lXLAXD AT SAX FRANCISCO Dig Atlantic Liner Makes Maiden Voyage Via Panama Canal. SAX FRANCISCO. May 19. The American steamer Finland arrived nere today on her initial trip from New York. Inaugurating a 17-day service between San Francisco and New York, which is to be maintained by the Fin land and her sister ship, the Ivroon- land. The Finland was greeted tor mally by city officials and committees of civic bodies. She carried a large cargo and had a passenger list of 445. Some disembarked at San Diego. The vessel encountered heavy neaa winds on the voyage up the coast ana arrived several hours late, delaying her docking. Swayne & Hoyt. agents for the steamers, have closed lor snipmems oi grain and other cargo that will move from here on coasters ana De trans shipped at San Francisco aboard the Finland. It is hoped to maintain a steady movement of certain commoai- ttes from north coast ports at times when the direct liners cannot accom modate all offerings. Captain Jessen nas numerous friends in this district and is one of the pioneer shipmasters on the coast. The Yucatan, Captain Paulsen, sailed last night for Australia with ZiUU tons of oats. She finished working coal at the independent bunkers yesterday and it is understood that on discharging her grain cargo in the Antipodes she will take on freight for San Francisco. The steamer Alliance, of the same line. to be floated from the Port of Port land drydock this week and proceed to San Francisco to be prepared for the Alaskan service. Ilayley & Kenny, at Colombo, Ceylon, shipped 100 pipes, nine punch eons and three hogsheads of cocoanut oil. valued at 60 cents a hundredweight on the Den of Airlie.
