For a voyage from Portland to Australia with a full grain cargo, the American ship John Ena, of which A. Lorentzen,' of San Francisco, la man aging owner, receives $54,000. say ad vices from the Golden Gate, which con tains the information that the Balfoiir, Guthrie & Co. took the vessel. An option for South Africa is included at $75,000. The. John Kna reached Kobe April 10 from Philadelphia and was to load iiiii-. for Sun Francisco. The ship left Philadelphia January 6 and proceeded via the Canal, getting away from Bal boa January -5. She is expected to be available here for July-August loading. She is a vessel of 2706 tons net reg ister and was built at Glasgow in 1S92. being 312.9 feet long, with a beam of 48.1 feet and depth of hold of 25 feet. She was formerly under the Hawaiian flag. Kx porters say that the Norwegian eteamer Hesperos. reported chartered last month to load here for Australia, is yet being offered at a high rate and may be closed for shortly. She arrived at Balboa yesterday from Taltal on her way to San .Francisco. Another carrier was offered yesterday for new crop. and. while two already taken for Portland loading were done at about C5 shillings, those now in sight are asking several shillings higher for loading: as late aa December. The Harrison liner Crown of Navarre, which Balfour. Guthrie & Co. will load here for the East Coast with grain, arrived at Seattle early yesterday mornins from British Columbia on her way here and is looked for about the last of the week. Another coming from there is the British steamer Kpsom. under charier to Kerr. Gifford & Co., which is due about tho last of next week. She is under extensive repairs, and on bcins dispatched from Portland goea to the United Kingdom, where more work Is to be done, part of the Job on the Coast being temporary. The Eteamer Yucatan, of the North Pacific Steamship Company's line, which was taken by Hammer & Co. for oats to Australia, is ready for sea. She finished working cargo yesterday and shifted to the Independent bunkers for fuel and should sail today. Every available part of the vessel has been stowed with the cereal, and she car lies about the largest cargo she has handled In her history. A carrier that cargo is waiting for is the British bark Kilmallie. which should be in the harbor early next month to work grain for the United Kingdom. The vessel la listed from Newcastle. N. S. W. Engagements continue to be made for the. shipment of grain and flour for New York on all liners, while the Cali fornia movement of wheat is under way again. BARK ESCAPES TORPEDO ieu dc Sonis Is Attacked 'While Towing to Sunderland. There was another grain ship bound from Portland for the United Kingdom, the French bark Gen de Sonls, that had a close call from one of the Kaiser's undersea fighters and in fact was re ported to have been torpedoed, but ac cording to the New York Maritime Register of May 12, she reached Sunderland, Eng., In tow of a tug April 15 after having been attacked by a submarine. The vessel was a member of the October grain fleet from here and left the river October 27, being next re ported at Queenstown March 11, and mailed April 6 for London, arriving there April 10 and was towed to Sunder land. On the way she met tho sub marine off St. Catherine's Point and in some manner managed to dodge a torpedo fired at her. It is assumed that weather conditions then made it pos- HiDie ior ner to evade a. rnrther at tack. The Dutch steamer Maria, Nor wegian bark Semantha and British bark Invercoe, from Portland, went to me Douom as a result or the war, and others well known here, but were not loaded this season, met the same fate. COASTER BTIIX'GIXO BURROS Long-Eared Visitors to Climb Peaks Along Columbia River. Two passengers aboard the steamer Multnomah, which sailed from San Francisco Monday night, are not listed either in the cabin or steerage, but have special accommodations, they be ing burros that are changing their Mexican homes, with the discordant racket of a revolution, for peaceful sur. roundings at the Summer home of Jul. lus Meier, at Latourelle, on the Colum. tola River. There the jacks are to find employment carrying younger mem bers of the Summer colony about the country, and if their dispositions have not been spoiled, they promise to be come lifelong residents of the pali sades. The Multnomah sails on the return Monday, as does the Wapama, both of the McCormick fleet- That line has Increased Its tonnage from Grays Har bor through tho charter of the steamer Norwood, which loads there with lum ber for Los Angeles, The Klamath, of that line, leaves here tomorrow for points as far south as San Diego. aiARCUS TALBOT REMEMBERED 'Widow Reoeives loving Cup From Port of Portland Employes. Not to exceed 3000 tons of cargo aboard, the American-Hawaiian liner Pennsylvania was damaged May 7 in a fire which compelled the vessel to turn back to Balboa and Irom which port she sailed May 13 for San Francisco, say advices here- She carried about 1500 tons for San Francisco and the same amount for Puget Sound, with about 500 tons for Southern California, while more than 35U0 tons were for Portland delivery. The plan is to unload the freight at San Francisco and there the liner will be repaired. It is said she is not ser iously damaged, which is evident by the fact that she proceeded under her own steam for the Golden Gate. Cap tain "Bob" Tapley and his crew are given credit for having put out the blaze, and they were aided materially by the Grimm "fire system with which the newest of that fleet are equipped. The Minnesotan. of the same flag, sailed from here last night after dis charging a large amount of cargo and loading for New York with 3000 tons. The criminal records of 2500 Portland. children will be destroyed by Circuit Judge Gatens before next Saturday. when he will be succeeded as Juvenile Judge by County Judge Cleeton. Yester day Judge Gatens began the work of tearing these records up, but it was such a monumental task that he de cided to send them to the crematorium instead. These 2500 children are a big major ity of those who have come before Judge Gatens In Juvenile Court. "Frequently parents have come to me, said Judge Gatevis, and asked that tho records against their child or children be destroyed. In many cases we have done so, for It would be a stumbling-block to any boy during his future life if he had a bad record in Juvenile Court. "When the Legislature transferred the Juvenile Court work to Jud; Cleeton I decided to destroy nearly all the court records so the boys may have a new chance under a new judge. Judge Cleeton would not want to destroy rec ords that were made during my incum bency, and 1 will not leave) tnrn. Th boys nearly all of them are boys need a new start.' With the assistance - of Peter Mcin tosh, chief probation officer, and A. M. Butler, court reporter. Judge Gatens started to tear up the records. The three changed their minds, however, and within a. few days the records will be carted away to the incinerator to be burned. DECISION NOT YET MADE Interchanging Agreement Readied With Big Three Fleet and Gain In Water Travel Xoted Since Advent of Xew Steamers. Steamship service between San Pedro (Los Angeles), Cal., and Honolulu may b provided by the Great Northern Pa cific Steamship Company during the Wrr.ter, while travel between Portland and San Franicsco is at its usual low ebb. In this eve.nt, said Cal E. Stone, traf fic manager of the company, yester day, one of the steamers regularly op erating between Flavel and San Fran cisco will be used in the Honolulu serv ice. "We have made no definite plans," said Mr. Stone, who came here from Sam Krancisco to attend a conference with G. L. Blair, manager of the "Big Three fleet, "but we have considered the advisability of providing some kind of Winter service to the Hawaiian Islands. Plans IVot Vet Definite. , "Our excursion from Los Angeles to Honolulu proved so successful last Winter that we have been tempted to try a regular Winter service. Of course, nothing definite has developed and it is not certain that it will." Present conditions force Los Angeles residents who want to go to the Ha waiians to go to san Francisco. This not only requires an extra day's time in each direction, but costs about $25 extra. It is not anticipated. In the event the proposed service is established, that it will be maintained regularly. There will bo sufficient business between Flavel and San Francisco through the Spring. Summer and early fall of each year to require the constant serv ices of both the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific, the palatial steamers now operating on this run. Last week owing to the washouts on the Southern Pacific, the Northern Pa cific carried heavy passenger lists and Air. btone contemplated for a few days turning the vessel Into a regular Noah's ark. Sella-Floto Circus Appeals. This was when the managers of the Sells-Floto circus appealed to him to carry them North from San Francisco. They feared they would be unable to keep their dates in Southern Oregon and in Portland unless they resorted to this means of transportation. Mr. stone figured that he could ac commodate the circus, animals, bag gage, equipment, performers and all. on one trip, and he would have done it in a minute had not the damage to the railroad been repaired, permitting resoration of regular traffic. At yesterday s conference between Mr. Stone and Mr. Blair, arrangements were made for interchanging both freight and passenger business be tween the two lines at San Francisco. The "Big Three" fleet, consisting of the steamers Bear, Beaver and Rose City, operates south from San Fran- clso to San Pedro. The Great North ern and Northern Pacific go no farther south than San Krancisco. Passengers now will be able to travel between Portland (Flavel) and San Francisco on the Great Northern and Northern Pacific, and between San Francisco and San Pedro on the Big Three vessels. Water Trnfflc tiro wince. Mr. Stone also contemplates ulti mately putting into effect an Inter mediate passenger rate of $17.50 for the one-way trip between Portland and San Francisco. The present first class rp-te is $20 and the second-class rate Is $15. "Ves, we are working right in har mony with the other steamship lines," ho said. "They are beginning to realize that we really have boomed travel between Oregon and California. People now are traveling who never traveled before and many are using the steamshio lines who always rode by rail before. We are putting them in the habit of traveling by water. It helps all the water lines." Mr. Stone has just issued his first folder for the Great Northern Pacific line. It Is a handsome 56-page book let, printed on heavy paper, well illus trated and adequately descriptive of the vessels and the territory that they serve. News From Oregon lorts. ASTORIA. Or., May 18.
