Spider Baum pitrheil himself into a 8-to-l victory today, a sort of come back after two wretched starts. lie allowed six hits and, barring tho first inning, when he was somewhat up in the air. the e.iemy couldn't begin to touch his service. Somebody said it was Biff Schaller's birthday. It must have been some thing: of the sort, for the Chicago lad started oft with a single to rigrht. then put the ball over the rente on two oc casions, walked on his fourth trip to the' plate, and Anally, in the ninth, forced a runner" at second, the only fly in his ointment. Portland's scoring: was confined to the first inning. With Derrick out, Speas singled to center and reached second on a wild pitch. Bates doubled to center and Speas was finally tallied as Corhan booted Stumpf's grounder. Bate C'auKhti Stumpf XIpped. Bates, rounding: third, was caught off the cushion and Stumpf was nipped trying to steal. The Seals got busy in the opener and stayed right with Krause for five satisfying chapters. Mitze grounded out to Derrick, but Schaller hit to left and took another base on Speas' bad throw. Schmidt's single to center drove in Schaller and the catcher was as sisted around the bags as Heilmann crashed one against the right field fence. Speas dropped an easy fly on Meloan in the second. Leard sacrificed his teammate to third and Roy Corhan worked the squeeze play successfully for the score. Schaller's first home run was in -the third. Schallrr Putt Ball Over Fence. In. the fourth, with two down. Fitz perald hit safely while Schaller put the ball over the fence for his second time of the afternoon. The fifth inning saw the last of the scoring. Heilmann started oft with a drive through the box to center. Jones scratched into a hit. Trying to get away from a ball, his bat struck the sphere and it bounced over the pitcher's head, Just out of reach. Meloan's smash to first that Derrick came close to turning into a double play was merely an out that sent the two run ners ahead. Leard scored one man with a clout past Bates at third, while Corhan's sacrifice fly to left gave Jones a tally. Thereafter all was peaceful. ROGER PECK.INPAUC.il. ex-Beaver shortstop, banged out three hits in four trips for the New York Tanks yesterday. Boston beat the Yanks 5-3. In this same game Chet Thomas, former Sacramento backstop, secured three hits for Boston. Thomas went up to the majors about three years ago. Ham Hyatt, of Northwestern League fame, did not connect as pinch hitter for Pittsburg yesterday against St. Louis, but the Pirates won, anyway. Hobby Keefe appears to possess the real stuff. Twice Walter McCredio has sent him out as relief twlrler and both times he has stopped the batting in stantly, and it is a, tough job checking the hits when they begin coming in droves. - ' - Detroit beat St. Louis 11-3. Coveles kie allowing the Browns eight hits. This Coveleskie is a brother of Stanley, of Portland. Del Baker, an Oregon boy, caught the game for Detroit. Baker broke in with Spokane a couple of years ago and after drifting over to the Union Asso ciation and Western League landed last season with Detroit. He appears to have made good with a vengeance. Resolutions were passed by the club's directors last Wednesday night that re flect the feeling of the Portland or ganization. A copy of these resolu tions will accompany the resignation sent to the association headquarters in Seattle. Amtlear Hooking for Sunday. Celro Kolas vs. The Dalles, at The Dalles. 2:3o o'clock. The race might go ten miles, or it might go 50 miles. (Taptain "Jud" Graham has played his last ball game for Washington. as he is forced to leave school on ac count cf the death of his father. This was "Jud's" third year on the team, and he served as second baseman in a style that has caused Dobie to forget about substitutes for the position. The result is 1 that' the tall Scot Is doing some hasty grooming to get "Peck" Oavis in condition to fill the hole when the team leaves for Oregon. As the teams rank now Washington has an even break, but ex pects to better its standing on Its next invasion of Etigene and Corvallis.
