THE MORNING OREGONIAN. THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1915. 15 POLICE TO PARADE Band Fund Campaign Opens at Noon Today. MAYOR ALBEE TO TELL AIM Baseball Game and First Perform ance of Community Festival and Jubilee to Start Swelling Coffers. With a big parade at noon, the base ball game at the Vaughn-street grounds In the arternoon and the first perform ance of the Community Festival and Springtime Jubilee to be held at the Orpheum Theater tonight, the monster campaign to raise money to send the Portland Police Band on a trip East to advertise Portland and Oregon starts in earnest today. More than 100 machines are to be In the parade. There will be different sections, each representing a different organization. George L. Baker, who is handling the parade, asks that all who have machines be on hand promptly. There are to be several bands and the Drum Corps of the Sons of the'Spanish. American War veterans. Senator Lane is to have a part in the parade and Mayor Albee and the City Commissioners will be there. Start la at Second and Oak. Following is the formation: Mounted police, platoon of police, Portland police band. Mayor Albee and City Commissioners, Senator Lane, Postmaster Myers and other prominent citizens. Fire Department band and ap. paratus. Fire Chief Dowell and bat talion chiefs. Letter-carriers' Band, Boy Scouts Drum Corps, Ad Club, Kotary Club, Progressive Business Men's Club and. other clubs and the Portland and Los Angeles baseball teams. From Second aikd Oak, the parade will move north on Second to Burn Bide, west on Burnside to Third, south on Third to Morrison, west on Morri son to Fifth, north on Fifth to Oak, west on Oak to Sixth, south on Sixth to Yamhill, west on Yamhill to Broad way, north on Broadway to Pine and disband. Following the parade the Portland police band will have its day at the baseball grounds. The net proceeds of the game between Los AnReles and Portland will be given to the band to be added to the trip fund. Jubilee to Begin at 8:15. The big festival and Jubilee will begin at 8:15 tonight at the Orpheum. Performances are to be held also to morrow night and Saturday night, with a special matinee for the schoolchildren on Saturday. The use of the theater has been donated, as have the various numbers. The programme tonight will open with a brief introductory talk by Mayor Albee. He will explain the campaign and the purpose of the band's proposed trip East. This will be followed by a concert by the Portland police band. Other numbers on the programme will be the Treblp Clef Club of 20 voices under the direction of Hose Coursen-Reed; John Claire Montieth, baritone; special drill of athletes from the Young Men's Christian Association under the direc tion of A. M. Grilley; Mrs. Max Politz; Arthur Ilarbough; a specialty drill by the crack drill team of the Woodmen of the World, and acts from the vari ous theaters. "Stunts" Given Downtown. Others who have promised their help are: Miss Leah Cohen, operatic singer; B. F. ("Biddy") Dowell, chief of the fire bureau, and his harmonica, and J. William Belcher and his chorus of 20. Tickets are sold by the patrolmen and firemen and may be purchased at the box office each night. They may be secured also at Sherman & Clay, Sixth and Morrison streets; Graves Music Store, Fourth and Washington; Seiber ling & Lucas, 125 Fourth; Huntley Drug Company, Fourth and Washing ton; Si Rich and Sig Sichel, Sixth and .Washington streets, and at the hotels. Last night a number of novel ad vertising "stunts" were given in the downtown district by the band mem bers, assisted by the Muts. MRS. SARAH DORMAN DIES Paralysis Is Fatal to Mother of Van conxcv City Engineer. VANCOUVER, Wash., April 28. (Spe cial.) Mrs. Sarah E. Dorman, 70, mother of B. L. Dorman, City Engineer, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Eddings, on Fern Prairie, near Camas, after an illness of two years, due to paralysis. The fu neral will be held tomorrow at 1 o'clock from the Fern Prairie Methodist Church. Mrs. Dorman was a native of In diana, and with her late husband. Thomas Dorman, who died in 1905. she came to Clarke County, where she had since lived. She is survived by seven daughters and three sons, all of whom are residents of Washington and Ore gon. Mrs. James P. Lea and Mr. Dor man live in Vancouver. THREE ADMIT AUTO THEFT Vouths Wanted In Seattle Are Cap tured on Vancouver Ferry. VANCOUVER, Wash., April 28 (Spe cial.) Three young men from Seattle, who were arrested on the Vancouver ferry today in an automobile, confessed the theft of the car from Seattle last night. They are Lester Sonville, IL B Carrnichael and Tommy Glover. One of the drivers sold an inner tube in a Vancouver garage to secure money to cross the ferry. They left Seattle as soon as the car was stolen last night and reached nere about 1 P. M. today. Sergeant L. E. McCurdy. of the Van couver police force, and Fred Rafferty, Constable of Vancouver, discovered the car. LAND PURCHASE ORDERED City Council to Take 40 -Acre Tract In Bull Run Reserve. The City Council yesterday authorised Commissioner Daly to offer the estates of J. A. and J. M. Bradford J400 for 40 acres of land owned by the estates near the Bull Run headworks in the Bull Run reserve. .The land adjoins a tract of J 20 acres now owned by the city. Commissioner Daly says the owners offered the land for 10 an acre inas much as it is of no value to them, being in the reserve. The Council considered the price of $10 an acre extremely rea aonable. PROBE OF FIRE IS ASKED Oil-Soaked Paper Found After 15 laze In House Occupied by Invalid. ; EUGENE, Or,. April 28. (Special.).- Mrs. L. Lockwood, an invalid, was alone in the Underwood rooming house, an old wooden structure with 30 rooms, when a passerby discovered the roof in flames. Eight Portland entertainers Who are ambitious to enter vau deville will give try-out perform ances at the Empress Theater tonight in connection with the second show. The local acts will follow the regular vaudeville show of which Joe Welch, famous Hebrew comedian, is the head liner. The acts to appear In the try out part of the show include Norma Collins and Thomas Maher In the presentation of a playlet called "The Boomerang." The other home acts to appear are Ernest Fielding, cartoonist, who has traversed a large Chau tauqua circuit; Emma Klipelle and Wilson Rogers, singers and dancers, and the Watson sisters, dancer, who have scored great success in many club entertain ments in this city. an Investigation be made. TACOMA, Wash., April 28. (Special.) "Dad's purse is the limit" Stadium' High School girls have put on gradua tion gowns. From classmates there will be no censorship of graduation finery. In marked contrast to the de cision of the Lincoln Park High School girl graduates who voted to restrict the graduation garb, the Stadium girls have decided to let each maid adorn herself as fashionably as she desires. Teh Lincoln Park girls agreed to limit the cost of a graduation dress to $5, and IS girls In the domestic science department are making their own gowns at a cost of $1. The Stadium girls decided "Dad's purse is the limit." The dainty gown and slippers an3 the hose shall be white, the Stadium girls have decided. However, even they can have no graduation gifts or bou quets at the school. Kach may bring those she has received for decoration of the auditorium, says the board. N. C. W. RISLEY DIES AT 80 Albany A'eteran, One of Sherman's Soldiers, Passes. ALBANY. Or., April 28. (Special.) Nathaniel C. W. Risley, veteran of the Civil War and resident of Albany for the past 35 years, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Malcolm McAlpin, in this city, at the age of 80 years. He was born in Atlantic City, N. J. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Sixty-third Illinois Vol unteer Infantry and served three years, participating in Sherman's marp1 to the sea and many of the most note worthy battles of the war. He was a past commander of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Risley came to Oregon in 1SS0 and had lived in Albany since that time. He is survived by four children Joshua M. Risley, of Twist, Wash.; Mrs. KUa Thomas, Mrs. M. McAlpin and Mrs. S. R. Willis, all of Albany. COMMANDANT DUE IN FALL Major McAlexander to Take Charge of College liegiinent Again, OREGON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, Corvallis, April 28. (Special.) The re detail of Major U. G. McAlexander, of the Thirteenth Infantry, as command ant of cadets at the Oregon Agricul tural College, has been announced by the United States War Department and he will take charge of the cadet regi ment next. September. Major McAlex ander succeeds Lieutenant P. J. Hen nessey, who, according to the regula tions of the War Department, must re join his regiment. Major McAlexander is now on serv ice in the Philippines, but will arrive in the States about the middle of May, when he will receive a leave of ab sence before taking up his new duties next Fall. CLASS ENDS TIMBER CRUISE Agriculture Forestry School Students Back in Albany. ALBANY, Or., April 28. (Special.) After 10 days' practical experience in cruising timber, the students in the school of forestry of the Oregon Agri cultural College have returned to Al bany from Detroit. Sixty-five stu dents, comprising all the classes in the school of forestry, made the trip, ac companied by the three instructors in that department. The party during the 10 days cruised 15 sections of timber in Township 9 south of range 7 east. They also made topographic maps. F. H. Brundage, of this city, supervisor of the Santiam National forest reserve, and four other representatives of the Government For est Service were with the party.
