CHAMBER BUREAU PLANS TO EN;
TERTAI. NEW JERSEY VISITORS.
Many Other Larue Parties Reported as
PlimnlnK to Stop Over on Way
' ' to or From Fair.
Information in the hands of the New
Chamber of Commerce Indicates that
many tourists on their way either to
or from the San Francisco exposition,
will visit Portland. It is expected that
after May 1 one or more large touring
parties will arrive in Portland nearly
every day.
On May 30. Governor James K. K.
Fielder, of New Jersey, with a party
of SO, will pass the entire day in
Portland. A party of 10 tourists from
Montgomery. Alabama, will reach here
at a later date. Letters being: received
every day indicate that many other
large parties of Eastern tourists will
include Portland in their itinerary.
Special committees will be appointed by
the Chamber to take charge of the
visiting tourists and escort them to
points of interest about the city.
Among the enthusiastic visitors is
George Edward Lewis, editor of the
Bryantville, Mass., News, who was In
the city yesterday on a slKht-seeing
tour of the Pacific Coast. While here
he obtained a large number of photo
graphs and several slides with which
he will illustrate lectures he proposes
to deliver after he returns to Massa
chusetts. So delighted is Mr. Lewis
with the Oregon country that lie plans
to return next Summer and pass his en
tire vacation on the Columbia River
above Portland.
The new Information and inquiry bu
reau established by the Chamber now
Is making extensive preparations for
the entertainment of the thousands of
.tourists who are expected to arrive
during the Summer. The consolidation
committee of the Chamber will meet
with the hotelmen of the city tonight
to consider plans now under way by
;tho new bureau.
PAPER TELLS OF TRAGEDY
;Mrs. II. M. Smith Has New York
Herald Extra on Lincoln's Death.
The 50th anniversary of the assassi
nation of President Lincoln yesterday
brought to light an old New York
Herald extra, issued at 8:10 A. M.. April
15, 1S65. The paper is a single sheet
f six columns, and has a crude two
column cut of Abraham Lincoln in the
center. About half the page ts devoted
to details of the crime, and the remain
der to discussion of the Civil War.
Besides A lengthy war editorial, the
last proclamation of Jefferson Davi3 is
given a prominent place.
' This paper is a treasured possession
of Mrs. Helen M. Smith, 2905 Fifty-third
atreet. who bought it in Attica, N. T.,
that morning.
Mrs. Smith was married in New Tork
In 1S60, and has been a resident of Ore
gon since 1876.
Drum Corps Benefit Tonight.
