ment is undeveloped. It is pointed out
that this land never will be developed
so long as the roads remain unim
proved. All main trunk roads will be paved
first, and the Columbia River high
way from Chanticleer to the county
line will be left until the last, giving
relief to all the farming district first
Fill to Walt Till Neat Year.
All of the Columbia River highway,
with the exception of about two miles
of fill, will be paved this year. It is
proposed to allow this fill to remain
unpaved for another year, so that it
can have the benefit of the Winter
settling process. It then will be paved
next year with funds from this same
bond issue.
For the reason that the proposed
improvements are intended largely to
benefit the farmers, members of the
grange and other residents of therural
districts have given enthusiastic sup
port to the bond campaign.
It has been emphasized that farmers
living along these roads will have a
freight and passenger depot at their
doors 365 days in the year. A farmer
living 25 miles from Portland will be
able to bring his produce to town in
an hour and a half.
In Seattle and other cities that have
seen the wisdom of building hard
surface roads, heavy automobile trucks
operate between the farms and the
cities. The farmer does not need to go
to town at all. He can stay in his
fields all day and his horses can be
employed on the farm instead of wast.
ing their strength on the roads.
We will get back from the tourists
in one year more than the entire Co
lumbia River road cost." says Amos S.
Benson.
Tourist Travel to Grow.
"We will have the finest scenic
highway in any man's country. It will
make Portland a playground during
the Summer vacation. Tourists who
now stop with us one or two days will
stop with us at least from two to three
weeks and spend their money. It will
tap all of Hood River, The Dalles.
Shaniko, Bend. Printville, Pendleton,
Baker, Walla Walla, Klamath Falls,
Crater Lake, Spokane, all of Eastern
Oregon and California, which have no
outlet at this time except by shipment
from The Dalles.
"When this highway is paved to the
city, making it passable 365 days out
of the year, the tourist travel coming
from California, Idaho and all or
Eastern Oregon will be immeasurable.
We would be justified in building the
Columbia River highway from Bridal
Veil to the Lpper ttanoy bridge to im
prove the farming district of 40,000
acres that is now unimproved. It also
will serve 8000 acres of the finest gar
den land from Troutdale to the city
limits."
