ROUGH VOYAGE ENDS Kongosan Maru 25 Days Way Across Pacific. on CAPTAIN TELLS OF TRIP Steering Gear Smashed, Engine Boom Flooded and Other Damage Done on Master' Worst Voy age in 88 Years. Completing the roughest voya he " has made In 26 years' continuous serv ice. Captain K. KfakaKatna, master or Mitsui Co.' steamsblp Kongosan Maru. brouR-JU Us ship to Albers Dock Xo. 1 Saturday night. "Bad weather from March 19 until April 2 made our voyage from Kobe to Seattle last 25 days," said Captain .Nalusawa yesterday. "I attribute the climatic condition o.ue to the firing of heavy cannon at the seat of -war. which causes low pressure of atmosphere and reaches to the Pacific Ocean. Others may believe, however, that the equinox may have had much to do with the storm we encountered. "We left Kobe March 12. On March 1 the barometer had dropped to 28.60 and heavy waves rolled over the ship, carrying away the chains of the steam steering gear, smashing the skylights over the engine and. boiler rooms and flooding those rooms for awhile. Engine Crew Cut Off. The coal was washed about and the members of the engine crew couldn't get to their bunks in the forecastle and had to sleep and eat in the engine room for a couple of days. In addition the hand steering gear was smashed. It was almost impos sible for the sailors to keep the vessel on its course, so I rigged seven cables from the wheel after the course was set. The waves would strike the rud der with such force that the kick of the wheel would, floor the helmsmen until this was done. But with all the trouble we had. the cargo was undam aged and the temperature was kept good in the hold. "Head or east winds were against us most of the way, as was the "cur rent and the barometer simply would not rise. Chief Engineer T. Sukegawa kept a man at the throttle all during the rough weather t slow down the engine every time the stern rose up so that the engine would not race. Steamer to Co Throngs. Canal. The steamer, which unloaded bran and wheat today, will go to Portland Flouring Mills tomorrow to unload corn, all of which came from China. We expect to leave for San Francisco Tuesday, and from there go to Chile, then to Philadelphia, via the Panama Canal, and then back to Japan." The Japanese steamship was an in teresting craft to visit. There was a Japanese Jeweler present with all kinds of watches, fountain pens and Jewelry to tempt the officers aixl crew, which number 49. The members of the crew are not allowed to go ashore, and a watchman stands at the gangway for that purpose. Besides the officers men tioned. S. Twanaga is chief officer, K. Ote, second officer, and G. Mayeyama, third officer of the Kongosan Maru. The vessel has made many trips to Portland. Coal was taken on at Na nalmo, B. C. Xews From Oregon Ports. ASTORIA. Or..
