GRUEL GOD NOT HIS Rev. J. D. Corby Says His Idea of Creator One of Love. CHURCH IS DEDICATED First Christian Spiritualists Plan to Keep Building Open Day and Xight Social Center to Be Created for Younjj People. "I brins the greetings ot the liberal church here today to you. I find in your statement of belief read by your pastor much that is common to our churches brotherhood of man. In strange contrast has been the inter pretation of relision of the 16th cen tury that has been going on in this city tor the- past four weeks. It is de plorable that young boys and girls have heard and read these statements, which make God a cruel monster. That is not my idea. My God is a God of love, not of hate and revenge." Thus spoke Rev. J. T3. Corby, of the First Universalist Church, in his ad dress yesterday afternoon at the dedi cation of the church building at the corner of Hassalo and Kast Seventh streets. Just acquired by the First Christian Spiritualist Church, which has Just been organized and incorpo rated. Rev. Mr. Corby outlined his idea of the working church, which is open iay and night. Church Always OpeD. "We want universal brotherhood. To vou mean that? How about the unfortunate, the underdog, the woman who will appear in court in disgrace? Will you be there to comfort and assist? These are the questions that come up. Some churches are like a power-house without any power. Most F-ortland churches are locked up all through the week. The First Uni versalist Church is never locked, day or night. There is water for horse and men. It is a community center, and a social center For any one in trouble the church should have an open door. The lonely, the sick and the down-and-out should be free to come to the church. And hence I welcome you to this community and I hope you will emphasize the true spirit of brother hood." . Roscoe P. Hurst read the articles of incorporation and the constitution, which were adopted together with the declaration of belief. The officers elected for the ensuing year are: Presi dent. Rev. Frederick M. Stollers. the pastor: vice-president. Mrs. Ida M. Stollers: secretary, Yetta Haines: treas urer. Mrs. Marie Lawrence: trustees. C. A. Baker. Alice D. Staley and J. S. Greenfield. The First Christian Spiritual Church has acquired the property of the old Hassalo-Street Congregational Church, the price being $13,500. through the efforts of Rev. Mr. Stollers, who has been in charge in Portalnd for the past year. Sunday Lunches Proposed. In bis address yesterday Rev. Mr. Stollers declared it was the happiest day of his life, to be thus able to hold the first service in a fine build ing. He pointed out that the building has a well-appointed assembly, gym nasium and a kitchen, and Rev. Mr. Stollers said that it was planned to have the kitchen equipped so that on ;"unday lunches may be given and the people need not go home for their din ners. He also said that Iances and other social functions are to be ar ranged In the near future. The church occupied is a historical structure. It was built more than 40 years ago. and many leading Congrega tional ministers have preached in its pulpit. Rev. Daniel P. Suver and. Key. BUSINESS EYE, EAR, NOSE AND THROAT. Paul Rader was pastor an annex was built in which are the ban quet hall, ktchen, basement hall and gymnasium, erected in the hope these would win young men and young women, and. it did for a time. The First Christian Spiritual Church, of Portland, has come in possession and proposes to make full use of this equipment. Its declaration of belief is broad. It believes in the divinity of Jesus Christ and the brotherhood of man. It believes that communication may be held with the spiritual world by relatives and friends. It believes that heaven and hell are conditions and life is continuous. Sermon Thoughts From Portland Churches. rriHB sermon delivered by Dr. John H. A Boyd, pastor of the First Pres byterian Church, yesterday morning, touched upon the disturbed conditions that prevail in Europe and in the hearts of many men and women of today, and gave the love of Cod r as the great remeay for all troubles. The pastor's subject was "The Weakness of Man's Nature and the Source of Help A Message of Cheer." "The great need of the world today is God," said Dr. Boyd. "The soldiers In the trenches unite in singing 'Jesus, Lover of My Soul.' A few begin the Rev. J. H. Boyd. iymn, others join in, and by the time the words 'cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing' are reached, men on both sides have been heard singing together. Voices and hearts are in accord. Man kind needs God. If we let him into our hearts there will not be room for dis cord." Dr. Boyd related a story of Kiphng told by a nurse who had attended the great writer in illness. She found her patient speaking softly, and, listening, she heard him saying, "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord .my soul to keep." "I thought you wanted something," said the nurse. "I do," replied Kipling, "I want God." In his Sunday morning sermon Ir. J. 1. Corby, pastor of the Universalist Church, said: "If the world is better today than it was a century or 15 centuries ago, it is because fathers and mothers, reform ers and teachers, have gone into the hells of the dive and saloon to recover the weak and the wicked, and with God's help have put those hells out of business. A man may fail, but our God never fails. He has said. 'My word shall not return to me void: it shall ac complish that which I please.' "The select and selfish heaven of a class must be given up. Heaven's gate is shut to him who comes alone. We are an eternal brotherhood. We cannot resign nor emigrate. The strong must learn to help the weak, the wise the foolish, the good the bad. until all are strong and wise and good." FIRST STREET WANTS CARS Delegation Asks Trolley Company to Reroute Hawthorne Traffic. A delegation consisting of I. E. Staples, A- Roeenstein. E. J. Solomon, Charles Rudeen, C Lewis. J. Henry and Henry Kahn was sent to interview President Griffith, of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company, on behalf of the First Street Business Men's Association Saturday concerning the rerouting of cars crossing Haw thorne bridge north on First street, bringing in passengers on First instead of Second street as is done now. President Griffith promised to in vestigate the possibility of so doing and has put the traffic department of the company at work studying the ad visability and practicability of making the proposed change.
