More than Ua vis itors were quests of the Commercial Club at dinner yesterday. II. L. Blan chard, superintendent of the experiment station: K. B. stookey and J. L. fetam made addresses. XEW YORK, Jan. 28. The stock market continued today to reflect the disappoint ment felt at the passing of the United States Steel Common dividend, but recovered a part of the severe declines resulting; therefrom. Reduction of the minimum price on Steel from 48 to 43 was effective In .making- that stock the most active on the list. The opening; quotation was at the new minimum and there it remained for the greater part of the session, occasionally ad vancing a fraction, but soon fall ins back as pressure of offerings became too strong;. Immediately after the close of today's mar- set another official reduction of the min imum to 40 was authorized. Although tlie undertone of the market was rather uncertain, leading railway shares were up a point and more from yesterday's low tvel, while some of the specialties, notably the petroleum group, jnade for greater gains. Metal shares also improved with a further advance in the price of metal. A disposition to pursue a course inde pendent of steel and allied industrial's was evidenced by tbe railway stocks in the later j dealings. Best prices of the day were then registered, with inetfwlar recession on re newal of bear operations and sudden weak ness in Missouri Pacific stock and con vertible bonds, the lauer losing 4 points. Another hieh record price for wheat. which crossed $1.5 1 to the accompaniment ox enormous export orders, a further snaa log. of time money rates, an advance in the price of stock exchange seats and Intima tions of more financing for leading railroads were embraced in the day s budget of finan cial news. Some of the granger roads submitted earnings for December, Chicago & Northwestern and Chicago. St. Paul Omaha showing comparatively -small losses in net. International shares were weak in London. The Bank of England showed a loss in gold of about IS.SOO.OvO, with a larger decrease la total reserves. The local bond market was Irregular, a noteworthy feature being the number of sales for future delivery, indicating foreign offerings. Total sales, par value, were I-'45i,. 000. Oats and Barley Are Tend ing Upward. " Milling wheat resumed its climb yester day and May bluest em went to $1.55. Ten thousand bushels were sold on- the Mer chants Exchange at this figure. The price represented an advance of 3 cents over the best bid on the preceding day and Is S cents over the last previous sale for this delivery. There was no change in the price of prompt bluestem. February was down half a cent ana March was naif a cent lower. Other white wheats showed the same ir regularity, but red Russian was firmer for all deliveries. Five thousand bushels . of May Russian' were sold at 91.39, &n fld vance of 2 cents over Wednesday's price. No business was reported In the coarse grains, but oats and barley were 25 to 50 cents higher on most deliveries. No early change in flour quotations is contemplated by local millers. Repjrting on the condition of the goods traie in tbe East, the Boston Commercial Bulletin says: There seems to be a little better demand for goods in the New York market for -dor mestic consumption. Tarn spinners and top makers report that specifications are coming a little better and there Is also more de mand apparently for the coating and cloak ing mills. Army orders are coming along still by the million yards, according to all the re ports. Ifowever, not all manufacturers are willing to take them even at substantial ad vances In prices, especially for those goods which demand the low and medium wools. Moreover, aside from the scarcity of the raw material there is the problem of caring for their regular customers, which the mills can hardly afford to ignore, even though the customers themselves are disposed, for one reason or another, to dally about the pur chase of goods. MARKET FOR EGGS EASES OFF AGAIN Larger Receipts and Slow Buying Torn Prices Downward. There was a more liberal supply of Oregon ranch eggs on the street yesterday. This, with indications of milder weather, operated against the market. Retailers bought from hand to mouth, and for the first time in several days, stocks did not clean up. The general quotation was 31 cents, case count. with some sales reported at 30 cents. Bids from the north were lowered. Poultry receipts were light, but were of ample siz and prices were steady and un changed. Dressed meats were also In suf ficient supply and veal was a shade weaker. No changes were reported in tbe butter or cheese markets., BEST ORANGES ARE HELD FIRM Steady Demand for Moderate Priced Apples. Ripe Bananas. Scarce. The orange market continues firm, panj ticularly for the best grades. Several car loads were unloaded from the steamer. Bananas wert distributed in the forenoon and ripe fruit was scarce. Apples are going out well at medium prices. The celery market was firm on good qual ities, a line shipment of radishes was brought up from Los Angeles and sold read lly at 35 cents a dozen. Hothouse cucum bers from Sherwood were quoted at 915 1.50 a dozen. There was only a limited sup ply of vegetables on the steamer. Good Ore Son potatoes are scarce and tending up ward. CHICAOO, Jan, 2S. War advances today outdid anything hitherto in regatd to prices of grain. May wheat took the lead and crossed above $1.50, a mark which not long ago seemed fabulous. Active buying carried other cereals as well as wheat to new high levels. Wheat closed unsettled at &ic to 131 cents above last night, corn fin ished -jc to (c up. oats a shade off to a like advance, and provisions at s rise or luc to 30c. Despite a recent almost vertical ascent of more than 11c a bushel, wheat today jumped upward right at the start. There was no selling pressure from actual hold ers. Baltimore sent word that wharf space was insufficient to accommodate steamships waiting to load for Europe and there were cables at hand telling of greatly tightened prices at Liverpool and Paris. Export sales of l.OOO.Ooo bushels of wheat at the seaboard and iiOO.OOv bushels here neiped bring about in the last hour the strongest swell In the market. In addition, it was said country elevator stocks in the Northwest had decreased 10,000,000 bushels for the mo:ith and that private mill stocks there were depleted. On ly once before In 20 years was May corn so high as today, but active commis sion-house buying readily absorbed large profit-taking sales. Foreign purchasing of oats counteracted the Influence of denials that the Canadian import duty on oats would be withdrawn. Realizing sales by owners, however, were Uherai.
