Thrilling and exciting moments has the Dlay "Big Jim Garrity" and the Baker audiences that saw its two per formances yesterday were warm to the point of calling and pounding their several sets of feet in expressing ap- Droval. Dike a veritable jacK-in-tne-Dox, it springs unexpected surprises. In fine array, in new and up-to-the-spirit-of the-day apparel, the old beloveds o melodrama flit before our excited vis ion In thrilling and hairbreadth es capes and escapades, and when the hero Is cornered, bound hand and root, even his consciousness slowly giving in to chloroform, and the two villains vie torioua. the entire audiences almost shrieked their lungs out when the de tective entered, with his I-wlll-save vou ability. The play la new to Portland. Big Jlra is an escaped convict with 1 years of a 20-year sentence yet to serve lor a murder he did not commit, but for which he was imprisoned on circum stantlal evidence. He -has returned to the scene of the murder, assumed the name of Dexter, has married and is wealthy and respected when the story opens. His wife has learned a bit or the secret that haunts him waking and sleeping and she has become addicted to a drug in her efforts to rid herself of worry. Her physician, Dr. Malone, has taught her the vice. He is the brains and moving spirit of a gang of thieves and through one of his tools, a maid servant, the Dexter home is robbed of the money to pay the men In Dexter's employ. Suspicion is di rected toward Dexter's son. Dexter discovers a suspect in the maid and orders her arrest. At bay and terri fied, the girl accuses Dexter, of being the long-sought "Big Jim Garrity." He leaps over the balcony and escapes. To compliment sentiment It is the daughter of Big Jim's sworn Nemesis who is engaged to young Dexter. Out of this awful tangle the story straight. ens itself smoothly. Then Malone con- fesses he is the murderer sought for 20 years. The play is well acted and beautifully staged. Robert Gleckler has another "mas ter mind" role, displaying a sharp sense of characterization as Big Jim. Wililarh Powell as Malone goes faithfully into the picture of the part and is realistic. Will E. Lloyd gives an admirably sus tained impersonation, calculating and clever, as the detective. Keenan Wal lace, as the irascible old judge, is capi tal and convincing. Walter B. Gilbert, as the butler, and-Clarke Sllvernall as young Dexter give good accountings of tnemselves. Of the important roles Florence Rob erts as Mrs. Dexter is distinguished In her artistio dissembling. Mary Edgett Baker took another step on her ladder of successes, in this play appearing as the maid. Eileen Wilson as young uexter s nancee is pretty and plays prettily.
