IS " THE MORXIXG OEEGOXIAN, MONDAY", JANUARY 23, 1913. SHIPS' SMS SHORT Lengthy Passages Overcome xby Quick Dispatch. SAVING TO OWNERS GREAT Sailers Get Oat in Less Than 30 Days and Steamers in Nine Days. Time of Vessels Worth Close to $1000 Each Day. Quick dispatcn erven the January grain fleet haB enabled the owners to recoup tor the loss of time occasioned by the long: passages some of the ships made In reaching port. Under normal conditions anywhere from a month to six weeks Is considered good time for a sailing vessel coming here in ballast to fret rid of her ballast, line with lumber and burlap, load and get to sea again. This season it has bpen the exception when a vessel remained in port lor a month, unless for repairs or for Borne other reason that was beyond the con trol of the charterers. - Of nine sailing vessels that left here In January the Undfleld. with Z7 oays against her. was the longest in ' port The Claverdon. which sailed from As toria yesterday, was in the river 26 days and the Sierra Miranda the same length of time. The Celtic Glan, which sailed late Saturday, was In but 25 days, the Hafrsfjord 24 days, tbe Cambusdoon 23 days and the fort Cal edonia and the Havila were towed out on the 22d day after their arrival in the river. The Kinross-shire. al though a big carrier, with more than 1000 tons of ballast to discharge, was In the river but 21 days. Tramp steam ers departing this month have received correspondingly quick dispatch. The Devon City, which left Astoria Satur day morning, was in the river but eight days and 19 hours, in that time loading a cargo of 8000 tons. The Onwen. with about the same sized -cargo, was in the river nine days. With ocean freights soaring to rec ord figures and with double the amount of money Involved that is usually tied up in a wheat cargo, this quick dis patch means much to owners and ship pers. The earning capacity of a good eized tramp steamer at the present time is around $1000 a day and even an average nailing ship's time is worth several hundred dollars a day. For this reason owners undoubtedly will be well Katisfied with the manner in which the January ships out of the port have been handled. Olli BCBXEB TEST FOR FLEET First Passenger Vessel Leaves Xew York Under Xew System. NEW YORK, Jan. 24. (Special.) The first oil-burning passenger vessel which ever went out of the Port of Xew York, the Metapan, of the United Fruit line, started today for Havana, Colon and points in the West Indies. The opening of the Panama Canal makes it possible for American ships to procure oil from California fields, as do vessels on the Pacific Coast. This is the first time a passenger shin on the Atlantic Coast has tried oil burn ing. The company hopes to get econ omy, efficiency and cleanliness. If the experiment proves successful. the United Fruit line will convert its 144 vessels, the largest fleet under the American flag, to oil burners.
