HEAVY SEAS ARE MET Wares Wash Over Ship,- Breaking Windows and Damaging Her Cargo Slightly Defeat Laid to Shortage of Fuel. In a neck and neck race from Coos Bay the George V. Elder, under com mand of Captain Lofstedt. defeated the steamship Breakwater commanded by Captain Jlacsenn by an hour and 35 minutes. The Elder left Coos Bay bar at 12 1, CI,t.,Kir nrA the Breakwater followed 10 minutes later. At Yaqulna at 8 o clock last ntgnt me Jimtr ten knots in the lead. The Elder con tinued to gain headway and docked at Columbia dock at 11 o'clock yesterday morning, while the Breakwater found her berth at an adjoining dock at 12:45 o'clock. The Eider was two days late this trip because of bad weather encount ered on her southward1 voyage and a delay of 24 hours at Eureka. The Breakwater struck a heavy sea during the night on her southward trip, which resulted in 40 feet of her starboard steel bulwark being bent In. a few windows smashed and trivial damage to cargo. Nobody was hurt The damage will be repaired at once. Captain JIacgenn wiM leave for Washington to appear before the board of United States Engineers in behalf cf the Coos Bay Chamber of Commerce. Referring to his defeat In the race from Marshfield. Captain Macgenn said that his ship could steam IS knots but that her log would prove that be had only made 11 H knots coming north He said that fuel kept him from letting her steam full speed. Captain Lavfstedt said that he had made a satisfactory trip north. Both ships carried light cargoes and pas senger lists. F. A. Dietrich, chief steward of the Elder, will leave the steamer when it arrives at Eureka. He goes on leave of absence and will visit New York. The Elder entered, discharged her cargo and cleared for California in seven hours. The officers of the Elder besides master, are Chief Engineer Lynch, First Officer W. Mygind, Sec ond Officer O. Olson and Third Officer P. Winsens. UMBER TOXNAGE WANTED Fixtures Indicate Handy Sailers De sired for Special Cargoes. Lack of suitable tonnage for trans porting lumber and other cargo to the west coast and around to the Atlantic states is reported by steamship men and the fact the larger types of coasters are being taken for that busi ness, also for cargoes to Europe, is pointed to as indicating ends striven for In moving goods and material that are in demand abroad. During last week the Russian bark Prompt was fixed by Hind. Rolph & Co. to load at a North Pacific port Tor South Africa at 80 shillings or S2s 6d. for two ports and a wheat option was given at 37s 6d. The bark entine Benecia was fixed by W. R. Grace & Co. from the North Pacific for a direct West Coast port at 45 shillings and the schooner Irene, which was laid up in the river, secured an engagement to load at W'estport for Valparaiso at 43s 9d, G. W. McNear being the charterer. The American-Hawaiian and Grace fleets between New York and the North Pacific are filling ail space alloted Portland for eastbound shipments and inir comparatively small lumber ship ments are being handled, so there is talk of trying to start a line of large steam schooners to ply regularly to New York, carrying lumber for there and other Atlantic porta and loading back with tin plate, coal and bulky shipments.
