Although eight clerks in the water bureau will be dropped from the serv ice January 1 because of retrenchment in forces, these men may be trans ferred to some other part of the city service to take places of clerks who have not been in the service as long as they. Although the Municipal Civil Service Board was expected to solve the question of who would be let out, no action was taken at a meeting yester day, the question being left to the City Commissioners. After they act the Civil Service Board will take a hand in the proceedings. City Attorney LaRoche has ruled that employes of any particular class shall be dropped in the order in which they have gone into the service, the last employed being the first to go. This must be done, he says, without regard to departments. The water clerks are senior to some clerks in the Auditor's office. Auditor Barbur ob jected to replacing his men with the water department clerks and has asked the Civil Service Board to change the names of his men from clerks to junior accountants.
