lO RIVAL TUGS ARE EVEH Each Towing Fleet Picks Up Two Carriers. TARDY VESSEL ARRIVES Appearance of Bongrand From Kockbampton Cheers Exporters. Ships Now Hailed From Afar in 'Competition. Honors are even so Jar between the rival towing fleets oft the bar, as each has picked up two ships, four carriers bavins arrived Saturday and yesterday. North Head reported an east wind as prevalent yesterday, and in the morn ing; it was light and at 12 miles an hour. The Kinross-shire came In from Hono- lulu Saturday, being taken in tow by the Wallula, and the Oneonta reported yesterday having; in tow the Norwegian ship Songvand, from Rockhampton, which had been on the way since August 7. The Tatoosh, of the Puget Bound fleet, towed in the Norwegian bark Llnneld, which put out of Val paraiso October 28. and the Goliah, of . the same flag, steamed in with the Rus sian bark Port Caledonia, which hails from Iqulque, having gotten to sea from there October 24. Ship Hailed Far OA. It is believed that a southerly wind offshore is helping the sailors to make the vicinity of the river. Incidentally, ,the coming of the Puget Sound tugs, stirs the Port 'of Portland skippers to make the interlopers hustle, and ships are being spoken when 30 to 40 miles off the bar. When competition was at its height before, one ship was towed 60 miles offshore. It has been found frequently that skippers of windjam mers report having been off the river for several days before being sighted, but they do not always find it possible to remain in the vicinity of the light ship. With only two tugs on duty they have not cruised seaward as far as at present The appearance of the Songvand proved a relief in exporting circles, as she was out about twice as long as should have been necessary to cover the distance. Usually the run is made In from 60 to 70 days, while she was 142 days on the way. The vessel is under charter to M. H. Houser for grain, end he also has the Port Caledonia. The Kinross-shire is consigned to the Portland Flouring Mills Company. Many Carriers on Way. There are two more carriers that should be near by from Iquique, as the Norwegian bark Cambusdoon and the Norwegian bark Birtha have been out more than two months, and the Nor wegian ship Cambuskenneth has been on the way more than three months from Cape Town. From eight to 10 squareriggers are looked for during the next week or two. 'They will be wel comed, as the fleet in the harbor has been given good dispatch and the Pol talloch, for Callao, is about the only one yet to finish. Arrangements are expected to be made shortly by the Puget Sound Tugboat Company with a Portland towing con cern to handle the work of shifting ships in the harbor, as the plan Is for the tugs to tow the ship from the sea to the harbor and return, not making harbor moves. It is understood that Captain O. W. Hosford has been nego tiated with to use the steamer O. K. Wentworth or the Weown for harbor moves, but no contract has yet been closed. News From Oregon Ports.
