CHRISTMAS SAVINGS BIG BANK CLUBS LAY AWAY LARGE SUM'S FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS. .Merchants Rational Members Here, Spokane and Seattle Economists Depo.lt More Than 920,000. Indications that the Christmas sav ings club idea, which has met with re markable success in Eastern cities. Is taking hold firmly in the Northwest are seen in the fact that the clubs in the leading cities in Orepron and Wash ington have been the means of accu mulating between $20,000 and $35,000, Portland's showing beins in proporition to those of her sister cities. As many as 1000 depositors have joined each of the clubs in Spokane, Seattle and Port land. The Portland depositors, who placed their spare pennies in the coffers of the Merchants National Bank, the only local institution that has thus far in troduced the plan, are delighted these days by the receipt of specially pre pared checks showing Santa Claus at work and decorated appropriately with holly. Beginning a week from today, four days before Christmas, the club will be formed to build up Christmas funds for expenditure ' on 1915 Christmas presents. This year the club was inau gurated in February and the campaign lasted 40 weeks. A person can Join the club under five separate plans. By paying 6 cents the first week and increasing the install ment by 5 cents every week the mem ber will have $63.75, Just as if he had started out with $2.50 a week and de creased his payment by 5 cents week by week. Those who pay in 25 cents weekly will accumulate $12.50, those who pay 50 cents weekly will save $25 and those who deposit $1 every week will have $20. If the depositor has kept up his payments, he will not only Teceive the principal thus accumulated, but also 4 per cent interest on his de posits. I "The fund is built up so gradually that It really comes easy," said Wilfred P. Jones, vice-president of the Mer chants National Bank. "The apprecia tion of the club as expressed by Its members during 1914 assures me that the Christmas savings club will be much larger this year and larger still every succeeding year." FOREIGN SERVICE IS ACTIVE lieutenant It. Johnson, of Portland, Tells of Philippine Duties. Lieutenant Ronaldo de Vore Johnson, son of Mrs. W. Carey Johnson, of Port land, is now attached to the Seventh United States Cavalry, with headquar ters at Fort William McKinley. Luzon, P: I. He entered upon his first three years' period of tropical service last February. He found the insular troops perform ing continuous practice maneuvers un der conditions almost as strenuous as those of actual campaigning. He writes that he will be engaged in topographical surveying in the northern part of Luzon for the next even months. He will have with him a force of white soldiers and Philip Dine constabulary, and will not see any other white people except the military inspector, who comes out for a few hours once a month. He remarks, in a recent letter to his mother, that "there will be something new to see all the time." H. S. STEPHENSON BURIED Oregon Pioneer Laid to Host In Rlverview Cemetery.
