THE MORNING OREGONIAX, TUESDAY, DECEMBER S, 1914. 13 SPQRISHEN FAVOR NEW PHEASANT ACT League Gathering Urges Also That Nets Be Barred ' l From Willamette River. PAMPHLET TO BE PRINTED JX. B. Van user Is Elected Presi dent, S. O. Bartran, of Hosebnr?, Secretary and Portland Gets Iff 15 Meeting. BT BAKL It. OOODWIK. Co-operation wu the keynote of discussions at the second annual con vention of the Oregon Sportsmen's League held In the Commercial Club yesterday. From all points In Ore gon delegates were on hand. Fourty four rod ami pin clubs with an ag gregate membership of more than S500 were rcpreaciiim. cigiib uuici uiuua asked to be admitted to the league. Through the entire day President Van Duzer was busy with the affairs of the association and when he called the morning session to order at 10 o'clock all the delegates were on hand. The entire morning was devoted to arranging motions and to appointing various committees. It was not until after 6 o'clock that the gathering ad journed to attend the "duck" dinner given In honor of the visitors by the Portland Gun CJub and the Multno mah Anglers' Club. Deer and Pheasant Lam Topics. The chief discussion centered on the deer and China pheasant laws. More than an hour was spent In discussing the proposed China pheasant bill to be presented to the Legislature at Its next session. It was thought advisable that the new law should make the bag limit on China pheasants five birds in one day or ten in seven consecutive days, each bag of five to permit of not to exceed two female China pheasants. This finally was carried unanimously. The present law says five birds is the bag limit and all must be China pheasant cocks. New officers were chosen by unani mous votes, but the selection for a 1615 camping place brought about a contest between Roseburg and Port land. With the understanding that the 1916 convention would be sent to Rose burg, the up-the-valley Representa tive withdrew hla motion in favor of Portland, for the gathering. One of the moat important things settled was the acceptance of an official organ. Full power was given to C. A. Riddle, who was secretary of the league until yesterday, to publish a pamphlet In the Interest of thoH league. The first issue Is to appear soon after the first of the year and each member of the clubs represented will receive a copy. The league Indorsed the Fish and Game Commission, but a motion was made asking that Its offices be cen tered in Portland. Neta In Willamette Opposed. The league recommended that the Willamette River, from Oregon City to the mouth, be closed to net fishing. From statistics offered by several it was shown that the salmon fishing with hook and line could be made more interesting and profitable If the com mercial men were left out of it. The present method of financing the Fish and Game Commission was In dorsed, and the league went on record against turning the proceeds from fish and hunting licenses Into the general fund. It was the sense of the league that no change be made In the laws regard ing migratory birds until the constitu tionality of the Federal laws on the subject has been determined.
